Ravichandran Ashwin explains how Bhuvneshwar Kumar can make it to India’s squad for ODI World Cup 2027

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set to make his much-awaited return to the Indian team after a four-year absence, with the veteran pacer named in the T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand, beginning October 22. The 36-year-old earned his recall after an impressive IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he claimed 28 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 7.95. Now the most experienced fast bowler in Shreyas Iyer‘s squad, Bhuvneshwar will be eager to make the most of his opportunity and add to his impressive tally of 90 T20I wickets.
Ravichandran Ashwin explains how Bhuvneshwar Kumar can be selected for ODI World Cup 2027
While Bhuvneshwar’s immediate focus will be on the T20I series against New Zealand, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes the veteran pacer could potentially force his way into India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted two key factors that could work in Bhuvneshwar’s favour — his ability to swing the ball and his fitness. According to the former India spinner, a strong showing in New Zealand could make the selectors seriously consider him for the ODI setup as well.
“He is going to New Zealand now. I am telling you, if he does well, everyone will immediately say, just take him for the ODI team as well. The selectors will be watching very closely. If he swings the ball and shows decent fitness, nobody can stop Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar from sitting together on that flight to the World Cup and Bhuvneshwar bowling the first ball of the World Cup,” Ashwin said.

Expectations high from Bhuvi to sizzle in New Zealand
With his return finally confirmed, expectations will be high on Bhuvneshwar when India take on New Zealand. Fans and experts will be keeping a close eye on his performances, as the series could play an important role in determining whether he remains in contention for India’s future plans.
The ODI World Cup 2027, scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, is still some distance away. However, Bhuvneshwar’s experience and ability to move the ball could make him an intriguing option if he can rediscover his best form.
A particularly exciting possibility would be seeing Bhuvneshwar operate alongside Jasprit Bumrah. Both pacers possess the ability to trouble batters with movement and accuracy, and their experience could provide India with a formidable new-ball combination.
