He went for the GAP

In 2023, Russell looked on course for one of the biggest results of his Mercedes career. Starting from P2, he recovered after initially losing a place to Charles Leclerc and later moved back into the fight at the front. Mercedes took a strategic gamble during the late-race Virtual Safety Car, putting Russell and Lewis Hamilton onto fresh medium tyres and giving them a genuine shot at victory. Russell charged through the field and found himself fighting Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris for the win in the closing stages. On the final lap, with the leaders separated by mere metres, Russell was running in P3 and pushing hard for second — and potentially the victory — when he clipped the wall at Turn 10 and crashed out, finishing officially as a DNF after completing 61 of 62 laps. A year later, in 2024, Russell finished a solid P4, but the real redemption came in 2025. Starting from pole, Russell produced a completely different kind of Singapore performance: calm, controlled and virtually flawless from lights to flag. He led all 62 laps, kept Max Verstappen behind him and converted pole into a dominant victory by 5.430 seconds. It was his second win of the 2025 season and fifth career victory, and it was particularly meaningful because it came at the exact circuit where he had suffered such a painful mistake two years earlier. From crashing out while fighting for victory in 2023 to standing on the top step in 2025, Russell went from heartbreak to redemption under the Singapore lights.
