Man Utd now planning January move to sign £43m Man City target, talks already held
Manchester United are eyeing a move for a “very high level” player during the January transfer window, after making a poor start to the Premier League season.
Lisandro Martinez hit out at the hierarchy’s failure to adequately strengthen the squad during the summer, following the 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, with the Argentina international saying: “I expect more [investment], 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox].
“I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night. Last season we did everything, we created the base to create an amazing team.”
Although his comments caused controversy, and the centre-back has since apologised, it is hard to disagree with Martinez’s assessment, considering United only improved their options in central midfield during the summer, barring the addition of a back-up goalkeeper.

The Red Devils still need to sign a new left-back, with Diogo Dalot playing there in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United, following Luke Shaw’s injury, while they are also looking to add another forward to their ranks this winter.
Man Utd eyeing move for Giuliano Simeone
According to a report from Football Insider, Man United are now planning a January move for Atletico Madrid star Giuliano Simeone, although it could be difficult to lure him away from the Spanish side, as father and manager Diego Simeone views him as an important player.
Improving the defence is viewed as a priority, which means Simeone may not be viewed as a top target, as his primary position is right-winger, and there could be competition for his signature, with rivals Manchester City also keen on a deal that could amount to £43m.
City have held talks regarding a deal for the Argentina international, and United also engaged in discussions back in the summer, so there is certainly no shortage of interest.
Ex-Alaves coach Luis Garcia is an admirer of the Atletico winger’s work-rate, saying: “He runs for 90 minutes without stopping. He’s a pain. He’s got a very high level. He makes something out of nothing at any moment.”
Moreover, the 23-year-old is known to show up in big games, with scout Jacek Kulig praising his record against Real Madrid.
However, Man United are yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League this season, and considering Martinez and Harry Maguire’s contracts are set to expire in the summer, improving the defence should be a priority for Michael Carrick.
