Spurs have a “mini Haaland” who’s up there with Williams-Barnett
Throughout the years at Tottenham Hotspur, some of English football’s top young talents have come through the ranks.
From the Ballon d’Or-winning Harry Kane to Dele and Luka Vuskovic, all three have trodden very different paths since leaving Spurs, but their status as three of the best young stars the Premier League has seen is secure.
Kane was a slow burner but has now become the greatest player in the world. Dele’s emergence onto the scene was certainly more explosive, perhaps akin to Luca Williams-Barnett.
While Dele was signed from MK Dons, it was in north London where he became a household name. On the pitch, Williams-Barnett will be hoping to emulate the former England international as quickly as possible.
Why Williams-Barnett is so highly rated
Behind the scenes, the 18-year-old has been making waves for some time now.
In 2024/25, the youngster scored 20 goals in 23 matches at youth team level. Last season he was just as prolific, bagging 16 in 19. It was also the year of his first-team breakthrough, but more on that in a moment.
What makes him so special? Well, he obviously knows where the back of the net is and he’s versatile too, capable of playing in midfield, on the flanks or up top.
There’s something of a Lamine Yamal, a Max Dowman about Williams-Barnett. He has this aura, this swagger and confidence that you associate with the best young players in the world.
He’s got the ability on the pitch to back that up too. The way he carries the ball is jaw-dropping. Time and time again at youth level we’ve seen the teenager tearing his way past several defenders before scoring a goal.
His close touch control is exceptional; the way he manipulates possession is seriously eye-catching.
So, why hasn’t he got more opportunities in the senior side? Well, it surely won’t be long before he’s playing a regular part in the Premier League. He may be 18, but he’s too good not to be playing.
What impact has Williams-Barnett made in the first team?
Saturday’s clash with Crystal Palace was just the third time Williams-Barnett has been seen in the first team in a competitive fixture. Given the way he’s been impressing, that defies belief.
What did not defy belief, however, was his performance at the weekend. Replacing Mathys Tel on the left flank, he made a devastating impact despite playing a matter of minutes.
With his nine touches, the academy graduate was phenomenal. Extremely positive in possession, he should have had an assist on his Premier League debut.
After dancing his way around several defenders, he teed up Mohammed Kudus who should have scored. The winger was just yards out but somehow missed the target.
Despite that, it was a glimpse of what Williams-Barnett can do. However, for those who saw him play in pre-season, they will not be surprised. The teenager was one of the stories of the summer for Tottenham.
Against MK Dons, he delivered a midfield masterclass during a second half cameo where he recorded three key passes and attempted as many as six dribbles. Also scoring in their final warm-up game vs Hoffenheim, it was an incredibly productive month for the attacker.
Spurs have another teenage superstar
While Williams-Barnett begins to come to the fore, attention will turn to the next up-and-coming stars at Hotspur Way.
Roberto De Zerbi will quickly need to ensure that there is a pathway to the first team at Tottenham. After all, Vuskovic left over the summer due to a lack of opportunities and Will Lankshear also departed.
He has been electric for Middlesbrough this term, scoring 15 goals in 16 games. Given the lack of goals back at Spurs this season, it is safe to say they could do with the young English striker now.
Well, worry not. Spurs have two exceptional young centre-forwards coming through the ranks. One goes by the name of Oliver Boast, who has bagged 15 times in 11 matches this campaign, and the other is named Ashiah Haughton-Sinclair.
Just 15 years of age, it might be some time before we see the attacker play first-team football, but he has already appeared in senior training despite his inexperience.
It’s easy to see why. This is one of the most ruthless strikers we have ever seen at youth level for Spurs. Last season he scored 70 goals and recorded 20 assists. In total, he’s already notched over 500 goals for the academy. The regularity with which he has been finding the net is simply staggering. With that in mind, it is hardly a surprise that some onlookers have described him as the club’s very own “mini Haaland.”
He’s a seriously talented young lad and he’s breaking plenty of records already. Back in March, at just 14 years and 313 days old, Haughton-Sinclair became the youngest player to make an appearance for Spurs U18s. It was a record that stood for nine years. As it happens, that was held by Noni Madueke who was once of Tottenham’s parish.
Williams-Barnett, for context, was 15 years and six months old when he was handed his U18 Premier League debut. That shows you how good and how well Haughton-Sinclair is developing.
Given the player’s age, it is important not to heap too much pressure on him, but he does look like the real deal right now.
