The Heartwarming Holiday Move Kristen Bell Did That Made Dax Shepard Propose THE SAME NIGHT!
Kristen Bell did something SO sweet, SO touching that it completely melted Dax Shepard‘s mind and heart.
On the new episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, Kristen and Dax describe how their impromptu proposal went down on the Christmas Eve of 2009.
Joined by her Nobody Wants This co-stars, Kristen tells Adam Brody, Justine Lupine, and Timothy Simons the romantic holiday story, and how it was especially meaningful since Dax had been a big ol’ Grinch when it came to the idea of marriage.

Dax: But I had planned the thing. There was a restaurant that we went to one time was the first time I said ‘I love you’ to you.
Kristen: [It was] Stanley’s in the valley.
Dax: And I think roughly it was going to be around some kind of anniversary. I don’t know why I was months out with it cuz I had the ring forever.
Kristen: You did?!
Dax: Yeah.
Kristen: I had surrendered [to the idea Dax was never going to propose]. Because you told me you didn’t believe in marriage. Pageantry. I was like, I kind of like that tradition. And he said because a piece of paper filed at a courthouse somewhere in California is not going to dictate the how I treat you. It’s just not. And so I’m going to treat you well and act like your partner for the rest of your life. but it has nothing to do with that piece of paper. So, these are very different things we’re talking about. And I was like, well, that’s kind of a pretty decent point.
Dax: There was some anarchist point of view is like, I don’t have to ask the state of California if we can be together and then ask them if we cannot be together. If I can treat you like my wife, we’re both children of like multiple divorces between the two of us. We got like eight divorces between the two of us. I was like, what does this mean? This thing doesn’t mean anything.
Kristen: So, I was like, okay, well, he treats me like his wife. Like I guess who cares. And then it was Christmas Eve. Eve. Yeah. And I [had flown] back from Detroit. I’d flown to Detroit by myself. Picked up his parents and flown back to California with them. And so we had been on a plane. It was a really fast trip. I was exhausted. We got in bed and…
Dax: What happened for me was we had had this beautiful Christmas Eve with my family and um we were in bed that night and you were kind of expressing gratitude for this little family we were making and I was like, ‘Oh, this is the moment I’m going to try to recreate in a month at Stanley’s over a salad, but it’s happening.’ I was like, ‘F**k it. I’m just going to go get the ring now.’ And then I went into the closet. I had it in a jacket pocket.
Kristen: He was rustling in the closet sand somehow I sensed it immediately. I’m like there’s nothing else he could be doing with this amount of priority right now that would seem this important. And so I just knew and so like my spine started tingling and like I just started like breathing heavy and he came out.
Dax: Yeah. She’s already crying by the time I got back to the bed.
Kristen: And he got down on one knee and he said, ‘Will you marry me?’ And then I started sobbing really really hard because that was very overwhelming of something I didn’t think was coming. Yeah. For about maybe I don’t know 45 minutes. We fall asleep. Next morning I get up to go make coffee and his mom comes to me in the kitchen and she goes, ‘Are you okay, bubby? I heard you crying last night. Did you guys have a fight?’ And I was like, [shows the ring] ‘no, I’m engaged!’”
Aww!!
So at some point Dax’s heart had already warmed to the idea of marriage since he was planning on proposing months later, but it was Kristen’s total wifey move of bringing his family in town for Christmas that made him feel like he couldn’t wait any longer.
Pretty epic proposal story!
