Liverpool now in pole position to sign exciting defender from under Arsenal’s nose

Liverpool are looking to strengthen their defence in the January transfer window, but will face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Virgil van Dijk is approaching the end of his contract, which expires next summer, while uncertainty remains over whether Liverpool will be able to retain Ronald Araujo beyond the current campaign.

Araujo has made an immediate impression since arriving at Anfield in August, establishing himself as an important part of Andoni Iraola’s defensive setup.

The Uruguay international has featured 14 times for Liverpool and was recently named the club’s Player of the Month for October, underlining his growing influence.

His uncompromising defensive approach has also earned praise from former Reds midfielder Jan Molby, who believes supporters have taken to the 27-year-old because of his commitment to the traditional responsibilities of a centre-back.

“It’s very unusual, I think, in modern-day football when you have defenders who just love defending,” Molby said.

“But he has come here and from day one he is kind of letting people know, ‘I’m a defender first and foremost, I love defending.'”

However, despite Araujo’s impressive performances, Liverpool have yet to secure his services permanently.

The defender remains contracted to Barcelona, meaning the Reds could face a difficult decision over his future when his temporary agreement expires, with reports a permanent deal would cost upwards of £47m.

Liverpool leading Arsenal in race for Castello Lukeba

Football FanCast sources understand that Liverpool are currently the most interested Premier League club in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Castello Lukeba.

The 23-year-old has attracted attention from several leading English sides, with Arsenal having monitored his development for an extended period and Manchester United also expressing interest.

However, Liverpool are understood to have emerged as the strongest suitors, and sources understand the Frenchman’s representatives have informed all three suitors of his desire to move to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, there has been a significant change behind the scenes involving Lukeba’s representatives.

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Philipp Hinze, via Sport Witness, the defender has left BS Group International to join Excellence Sport Nation.

The agency switch comes as Lukeba prepares to take the next step in his career, with the former Lyon youngster keen to establish himself at one of Europe’s leading clubs.

His release clause is reportedly due to fall from €80m to €65m, approximately £54m, in summer 2027, potentially making a move more achievable.

While Arsenal have tracked the defender for longer, Liverpool’s ability to offer him a more immediate route to a starting role has placed Iraola’s side firmly in the driver’s seat in the race for his signature.

Marco Rose and Max Eberl praise Liverpool target Castello Lukeba

Lukeba has earned considerable praise during his time in Germany, with former RB Leipzig manager Marco Rose particularly impressed by his development.

“Castello Lukeba – what a player, what a boy!” the now Bournemouth manager declared. “He is a really good, ambitious central defender who has a big future, someone who has proved a lot already.”

Former Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl has also highlighted the Frenchman’s technical and defensive qualities.

“He is left-footed and can play as a left-sided centre-back in both a back-three and a back-four. Castello’s main strengths are his tough-tackling nature, his pace, his positioning and how good he is on the ball.”

Those attributes could make Lukeba an attractive option for Liverpool, particularly as a left-sided version of Araujo.

The Reds have also been linked with Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, but Lukeba would offer a different solution by strengthening multiple positions at once.

Mikel Arteta’s use of versatile defenders at Arsenal has demonstrated the value of having more physical options out wide, and Iraola has already made use of that strategy with Araujo.

For Liverpool, securing Lukeba would represent an investment in the future of their defence, potentially allowing the club to prepare for life after Van Dijk while continuing to build a more well-rounded squad.
