League One in Numbers: 20–21 October 2026

Latest edition · Saturday 24 October 2026

Cambridge United had the most shots in League One and lost; Sheffield Wednesday shared the highest shots-on-target total and failed to score. Cambridge’s 20 attempts produced six on target and two goals, but Plymouth scored three from eight attempts to win 3–2. Wednesday put eight on target at Doncaster and still lost 2–0. This week’s numbers show where pressure became goals—and where it brought no points.

League One: most shots

Cambridge United took 20 shots, put six on target and scored twice against Plymouth, but a 3–2 defeat left them without a point. Doncaster’s 19 attempts also produced six on target, yet their two goals secured a 2–0 win over Sheffield Wednesday and three points. A similar attacking volume brought very different returns.

Burton Albion scored twice from 18 attempts, seven on target, to beat Leyton Orient 2–1 and take three points. Peterborough also had 18 shots but put only two on target, scoring once in a 1–1 draw at Bromley. Their point shows why the shot total needs to be read alongside both accuracy and the score.

League One: most shots on target

Luton and Sheffield Wednesday each recorded eight shots on target, but only Luton turned that pressure into goals and points. Luton scored twice to beat Leicester 2–1 and collect three points; Wednesday scored none and lost 2–0 at Doncaster.

Cambridge’s six shots on target produced two goals but no points in their 3–2 defeat. Mansfield also put six on target and scored four in a 4–1 win at Blackpool. The same number of attempts testing the target therefore brought twice as many goals for Mansfield and a three-point return.

League One: highest possession

The three highest possession shares all ended in 1–1 draws. Stockport County had 74% at Notts County, Peterborough had 69% at Bromley and Wycombe had 66% at AFC Wimbledon. Each scored once and took one point: their greater share of the ball did not become a winning score.

Doncaster won 2–0 with 35% possession, scoring twice and taking three points against a Sheffield Wednesday side with 65%. Plymouth had 40% at Cambridge but scored three times to win 3–2. These results show that having less of the ball did not prevent either side from scoring more goals or winning.

League One: highest share of shots on target

Luton put eight of 11 attempts on target, the highest share at 72.7%, and scored twice in a 2–1 win over Leicester. Second-placed Bromley put five of seven on target (71.4%) but scored once in a 1–1 draw. Plymouth, third on 62.5%, scored three from five shots on target to win 3–2 at Cambridge. Plymouth’s lower on-target percentage still produced more goals than either side above them.

Peterborough put just two of 18 attempts on target (11.1%) and scored once to draw 1–1 at Bromley. Oxford United put two of 15 on target (13.3%) but scored none in a 0–0 draw with Bradford. Both took a point, though Peterborough’s goal was enough to avoid defeat after conceding while Oxford kept a clean sheet.

League One: the last-five form table

Huddersfield and Stockport County share the strongest last-five return: four wins and one draw for 13 points each. Huddersfield scored 13 and conceded five across those games; Stockport scored eight and conceded two. Mansfield Town are the next unbeaten side, with three wins, two draws and 11 points.

The unbeaten comparison splits further down: Oxford United have two wins and three draws for nine points, while Bradford have one win and four draws for seven, so the difference is two points despite neither losing in the period. Bradford’s goals column is especially lean, three scored and one conceded, before Huddersfield visit on Saturday.

At the bottom, Barnsley have one point from a draw and four defeats, but their five goals show this is not simply a no-goals story. AFC Wimbledon have two points with three goals for and 12 against, while Wigan and Blackpool each have three points from one win and four defeats. Which of Barnsley and AFC Wimbledon turns a winless five-game run into something better first?
