Ian Holloway takes aim at a local paper’s player ratings after Swindon’s 1-1 draw with Accrington on Saturday afternoon.

The Swindon boss discussed the ratings given by the Swindon Advertiser for the 2-0 EFL Trophy defeat to Newport in midweek.

When talking to BBC Radio Wiltshire, Holloway spoke on the player ratings from the Swindon Advertiser: “And it’s hard to watch when a young man played really well yesterday in training. And, what did he get? James Debayo. Can you see it on there? There you are. Five out of ten, yeah. So that’s not bad, that’s from Joe, by the way. He sat right here. Yeah, so now, what’s he gonna get after today? Can’t wait to read them Joe.

“This is just like when I first came here. The left back was getting crucified about picking up… he’s gone on to have a career we gotta be strong enough to play for this club because we don’t get a lot of support from the areas when you read that yourself ‘oh dear how tough is that to deal with’…”

Holloway also said in his post match interview: “It’s difficult to take in a minute, isn’t it? We’re seeing ourselves create some chances, we did today, and not take them, and then 23 seconds in, we’ve let a goal in that was a great cross. But that’s our kickoff.

“What, you know, it’s almost as if it’s quite unbelievable what we’re doing. And then Drinan, start the second half after we got back in it. Had more and more more chances, took over the first half territorially and chance wise and then we start the second half with one long ball. He goes through. I’m thinking here we go. This will get us running. This will get us confidence. This will get us flowing again. And he’s missed.

“So, and then in the end you put your subs on, who didn’t play very well the other night to be honest. They didn’t, their ego’s taking a bit of a battering if they read any of the local opinions of them. So, the boys have got to deal with that, and we got booed off and I can understand that because we didn’t look positive at the end of the game and the substitutions didn’t make an impact like I wanted them to.

“So, but we got a point. Unbelievable block, unbelievable block that got us the point and let’s try and build from there.”

Interviewer: “I mean, how hard is it to make those substitutions when you know that your players are making that impact in the game?

Ian Holloway: “They can’t play and they’re going to get injured. They’re going to get injured if they play any longer. And it turns out now that Tafazolli has actually got a broken toe, right? People are questioning whether he’s, oh, it’s a bone bruise. You got to deal with that. He’s got a broken toe. We’ve had to go and get a MRI scan on it now. Why weren’t that done however long ago, mate, it’s weird, but we got to dig in. Keep fighting. We got a point and we were one down after 23 seconds. I’ve seen things like this before. And I think it’s us and it’s a rotation and it’s what are we doing to each other? What are we saying? The boys got to deal with that. They know how tough it is to play here.”

Interviewer: “I mean with another early goal, what can you guys look at? What can you do to help move on from that?”

Ian Holloway: “Well, not let a goal in after 23 seconds, because some of our blocks, some of the play that we have got is really good. But it’s just the way things are going. You got to dig in. Siege mentality. That’s how I feel. That’s what matters.”

Interviewer: “And one player certainly got stuck in today, Dan Butler. That felt like his best game for us yet. Do you think just like any signing, the more that time he’s having with us, the more impact that he can make?”

Ian Holloway: “He’s done really well cuz he’s an experienced lad and he got two out of 10 the other nine. So, come on.”

Interviewer: “And then finally, word for skip on his 500th professional appearance today.”

Ian Holloway: I give his mim a hug earlier on cuz what a wonderful man, what a wonderful player, what a fantastic captain to have. The lads have clubbed together to get him a beautiful watch, so let’s hope that that carries on. Yesterday, watched them, I’ve never been so proud of a team in my life. The way they fought for each other, the way they were talking, the way they got there. James Debayo was excellent yesterday. Unfortunately, he’s done one or two things wrong. It sounds very much like the fullback we had here before. You know what I mean?”
