Blow for Sri Lanka as Kusal Mendis ruled out of England T20Is; replacement announced
Sri Lanka have suffered a significant setback ahead of their upcoming T20I series against England, with captain Kusal Mendis ruled out after failing to recover from a hamstring injury. Mendis’ absence leaves a major void at the top of Sri Lanka’s batting order, while Charith Asalanka has been handed the captaincy for the three-match series.
Mendis had been working his way back from the injury but has not recovered sufficiently to take part in the shortest-format leg of the England tour. Asalanka, who was originally named vice-captain, will now lead the side in what marks his return to T20I cricket.
Kusal Mendis’ injury continues to keep him on the sidelines
Mendis picked up the hamstring problem during the Lanka Premier League in July while representing Colombo Kaps. The injury forced him to miss Sri Lanka’s subsequent two-Test series against India at home, and his recovery has now taken longer than initially hoped.
The experienced batter has been an important part of Sri Lanka’s limited-overs setup, making his absence particularly significant with England awaiting them. His ability to provide momentum at the top of the order will be missed as Sri Lanka look to challenge a strong English side away from home.
With Mendis unavailable, Pavan Rathnayake has been brought into the squad as his replacement. The young batter will have an opportunity to make an impression against one of the leading teams in T20 cricket.
Charith Asalanka begins another stint as Sri Lanka captain
Asalanka will now shoulder the responsibility of leading Sri Lanka after initially being named Mendis’ deputy. His appointment also comes with a personal milestone, as the series represents his comeback to the T20I side. The left-hander was left out of Sri Lanka’s tour of the West Indies in June, but his return comes at a crucial moment. He will have to balance his own comeback with the demands of captaincy as Sri Lanka prepare for a challenging assignment in England.
His leadership will be closely watched, particularly with several key players expected to play important roles throughout the series.

Dilshan Madushanka replaces injured Binura Fernando
Sri Lanka have made another change to their squad, with left-arm pacer Binura Fernando ruled out after suffering a back injury. Dilshan Madushanka has been called up as his replacement. Madushanka’s inclusion gives Sri Lanka another left-arm pace option and adds variety to a bowling attack featuring experienced campaigners such as Dushmantha Chameera and Nuwan Thushara.
The first T20I between England and Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on September 15. The series will provide both teams with valuable preparation ahead of their upcoming international commitments.
