Arsenal agree £77m deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes with day of medical booked

There has been a major development regarding Arsenal‘s ambitious summer transfer window, with the Gunners reportedly reaching an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Bruno Guimaraes.

The Premier League champions have already enjoyed a relatively productive transfer window so far as Mikel Arteta’s side aim to defend their top flight crown in 2026/27. Sporting director Andrea Berta has strengthened areas of the squad with the permanent arrival of title winner Piero Hincapie, whereas new faces have joined in goalkeeper Illan Meslier and winger Christos Tzolis.

However, adding Guimaraes and fellow Brazilian and rumoured target Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid would arguably be the marquee signings of the summer in the Premier League.

Interest in the Newcastle captain is nothing new. Arteta has been an admirer of Guimaraes ever since the midfielder was starring for Lyon before his move to Newcastle in January 2022.

Arsenal considered a deal before the Magpies won the race for his signature, and the club have continued to monitor him over recent years as Guimaraes starred at St James’ Park.

Now, after weeks of speculation, a breakthrough appears to have been made.

Arsenal agree £77m Guimaraes deal with medical scheduled

According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal have ‘set aside a day next week’ for the Brazilian’s medical at London Colney.

The latest report claims Arsenal and Newcastle have agreed a package worth £77m plus bonuses, with only final details to be completed before Guimaraes’ medical.

If the move is sealed, Arteta will inherit one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.

Last season, Guimaraes combined his ball-winning ability with more attacking output, registering nine Premier League goals and five assists while ranking among Newcastle’s leaders for progressive passes, tackles and ball recoveries.

Comfortable operating as a No.6 or No.8, the Brazil international excels at receiving possession under pressure before driving his team forward, so his arrival could give Arsenal one of the strongest midfields in Europe.

Football FanCast’s verdict

Credibility

Arsenal’s interest in Bruno Guimaraes has been a hot topic of conversation this summer. Mikel Arteta has admired the Brazilian since his Lyon days, so signing one of the Premier League’s best midfielders would be a major statement of intent.

Scouting

Guimaraes would bring exactly what Arsenal need in midfield – progressive passing, ball-winning ability and leadership. It could be a frightnening midfield trio with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

Finances

£77m plus add-ons would make Guimaraes Arsenal’s second most expensive signing behind Rice. While it is a huge investment, the 28-year-old appears to be entering his prime and has already proven himself.

Guimaraes may end up operating at the base of midfield to allow Declan Rice greater freedom to break forward, or line up alongside Rice in a double pivot with Martin Odegaard occupying the advanced creative role. His ability to dictate possession, regain the ball quickly and contribute goals would add another dimension to a side already packed with technical quality.

For a player Arteta’s wanted for years, Arsenal now finally appear to be closing in on their man, making this one to keep an eye on in the coming days.
