Olivia Rodrigo helped a fan get across the college finish line by quietly paying for her final semester of tuition.
A recent University of Alabama graduate and content creator revealed the gesture in a TikTok video reflecting on her time on the platform. Jamie Causey initially kept the story private because she “didn’t want something that meant so much to become a public spectacle,” but decided to share it after earning her degree.
The two first connected when the pop star stumbled across one of the student’s birthday videos and left her a comment wishing her.
Causey later opened up about being a first-generation college student who was struggling to cover tuition for her final semester, which she noted wasn’t intended as a plea for assistance or pity; she was just sharing what she was going through with her followers. Rodrigo nevertheless saw it and reached out privately with an unexpected offer.
“She told me she loved my videos and I was a source of positivity and light for her, and she wanted to help me graduate,” Causey recalled in a video this week. “And she did.”

The Capstone alum shared a screenshot of a direct message in which the singer-songwriter offered to help and asked whether she could send the money through Venmo. Causey replied that while she didn’t want to shift the burden of her financial needs onto others, she was glad to accept any help. A follow-up message from Rodrigo’s representative revealed that the singer made a $5,000 contribution toward Causey’s studies.
“Olivia, I don’t know if you’ll ever understand how much that means to me,” Causey said about the interaction. “You made me feel like I belong on this platform. You didn’t owe me anything. You just chose to show kindness to a stranger. You’ve always been about giving back to others, and that’s something I’ll take with me forever.”
The experience also became part of a larger lesson Causey took from building a community online. She thanked numerous people who had supported her on social media, including Paris Hilton and other content creators, before encouraging viewers to extend similar gestures to others.
“Send the message, pay for the coffee, pay for the car behind you or just smile at someone,” she said. “You never know the difference it will make.”
In June, Rodrigo released her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. The singer is preparing to launch “The Unraveled Tour” in late September following a string of recent performances, including a surprise appearance with the Smashing Pumpkins at Lollapalooza and an intimate pop-up concert at Brooklyn’s Warsaw.
