Whether it’s arguing over the Premier League vs La Liga or debating who’s really the “farmer’s league,” these conversations never end – and settling them by opinion alone always leaves someone unconvinced.

That’s where the Opta Power Rankings come in. It’s a global rating system that scores every one of Opta’s 13,500-plus tracked men’s domestic football teams out of 100, built from an algorithm that crunches match results across more than 600 leagues in over 180 countries.

Zero is the weakest team in the world; 100 is the strongest. The model updates daily, so what follows is a live snapshot rather than a fixed opinion – here’s where the top 20 stand right now.

World’s Best Teams: 20th-16th

Benfica and Chelsea just crack the top 20

Benfica round out the top 20, their unbeaten league campaign not quite enough to keep pace with the sides above them in Portugal due to drawing too many games. Club Brugge sit level with them in 19th after a big week of momentum, opening their domestic campaign with a dominant win, while Chelsea occupy 18th as they look to bounce back this season under Xabi Alonso.

Nottingham Forest and Sporting CP round out this bracket locked together on 92.1 – the Forest run to the Europa League semi-finals still carrying weight in the model months on.

World’s Best Teams: 15th-11th

Brentford and Bournemouth the surprise packages

Borussia Dortmund open this bracket in 15th, with Brentford – flying under Keith Andrews – one place above them in 14th thanks in no small part to the goalscoring exploits of Igor Thiago.

Newcastle sit in 13th, before Brighton and Bournemouth round out the top 20’s mid-table, the latter still benefiting from the platform built under their former manager Andoni Iraola before his move to Anfield.

Liverpool, Inter and Real Madrid feature

Liverpool sit on the brink of falling outside the elite at 10th, still rated highly off the back of their 2024/25 title before a rockier campaign saw Arne Slot depart and Iraola arrive from Bournemouth. Inter Milan are just ahead in 9th under Christian Chivu, having claimed the Serie A title back from Napoli.

Real Madrid and Aston Villa sit level on 95.0 in 8th and 7th respectively – Madrid’s rating still propped up by past pedigree despite a trophyless season that saw Jose Mourinho arrive this summer, while Villa’s Europa League triumph caused them to surge up the rankings.

Manchester United round out this bracket in 6th, their resurgence under Michael Carrick continuing to pay dividends in the ratings.

World’s Best Teams: 5th-1st

Arsenal beat out Bayern Munich

Barcelona open the top five in 5th after a dominant La Liga-winning campaign under Hansi Flick. PSG sit fourth having retained the Champions League with victory over Arsenal, before Manchester City in third under new boss Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

At the very top, Bayern Munich and Arsenal are locked together on a perfect 100.0 rating – Bayern’s attack of Harry Kane, Luis Diaz, Michael Olise and company still humming, while the strength of Arsenal’s Premier League title and imposing defensive record keep Mikel Arteta’s side neck and neck at the summit despite losing in Budapest to PSG.
