“You will never win the World Cup with this combination”: Mohammad Kaif blasts Team India management after 4th T20I loss to West Indies

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has launched a strong criticism of the Indian team management following the Men in Blue’s 24-run defeat against the West Indies in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad on Wednesday, October 14. Kaif questioned India’s bowling combination and warned that the team could struggle to win the 2028 T20 World Cup if it continues with its current approach.

India conceded a massive 247/3 in 20 overs before managing 223/9 in 19.3 overs during the chase. The defeat levelled the five-match T20I series at 2-2, setting up a decisive final match in Bengaluru.

Mohammad Kaif questions India’s bowling combination

Kaif believes India cannot rely on their batters to win every match, particularly when the bowling attack struggles to defend large totals. Speaking on Cricbuzz, the former India international held the bowlers responsible for the defeat and argued that the team needs a more balanced playing XI.

“The truth here as to why the Indian team lost is because of their bowling. The blame should go to them. 247 is a lot of runs. We lost because we bowled badly. There were too many runs on the board. Also, this is not happening for the first time. What happens in a five-match series is that usually batters win you three games, and bowlers win you the other matches. Here, bowlers are not winning you games at all. You will never win the World Cup with this combination,” Kaif said.

His comments focused on India’s preference for batting depth, which has sometimes come at the expense of including additional specialist bowlers. Kaif believes the team management must reconsider its selection strategy if India want to remain competitive in major international tournaments.

India’s bowlers struggle to contain West Indies

India’s bowling attack endured a difficult evening in Hyderabad after the hosts elected to field first. West Indies captain Shai Hope led the charge with an unbeaten 102 off just 50 deliveries, striking 9 sixes and 4 fours.

Sherfane Rutherford provided excellent support, remaining unbeaten on 49 from 26 balls. Their aggressive batting helped West Indies finish with 247/3, putting India under considerable pressure before the chase began.

India’s bowlers struggled to maintain control, with several expensive spells allowing the visitors to build momentum. The absence of consistent breakthroughs also made it difficult for the hosts to slow the scoring rate during the middle and death overs.

Kaif argued that the problem extended beyond one match, pointing to repeated difficulties with execution, fielding and bowling plans during the series.

Kaif questions India’s bowling plans on a flat Hyderabad pitch

Kaif also criticised India’s tactics, suggesting that the bowling unit failed to make sufficient use of variations suited to the Hyderabad surface.

“India’s bowling plans were poor for this surface. In Hyderabad, the slow bouncer is the most effective delivery. Think of how many batters Pat Cummins [in IPL] dismissed using the square boundaries with that delivery. India missed a trick by not using the slower bouncer,” he added.

The former batter’s argument was that flat pitches and short boundaries require bowlers to be especially precise with their lengths, changes of pace and field placements. Simply relying on the batting line-up to chase down enormous totals, he suggested, is not a sustainable strategy.

India fall short despite their batting effort

India showed intent during the chase but could not maintain the required momentum throughout the innings. Sanju Samson provided an aggressive start with 56 off 23 deliveries, giving the hosts hope of completing a difficult run chase.

However, Keemo Paul delivered a match-winning spell of 5/41, repeatedly breaking India’s rhythm. West Indies eventually restricted the hosts to 223, securing a 24-run victory and levelling the series.

The result highlighted the contrast between West Indies’ ability to post a huge total and their bowlers’ effectiveness in defending it.

The fifth T20I in Bengaluru will give India an opportunity to respond after the Hyderabad setback. The team management will need to assess its bowling options and determine whether a different combination can provide greater control.
