Why Everton could appoint the “next England manager”

With an unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign and the club sitting in fifth position after the first six games, you would expect things to be smooth sailing at Everton Football Club.

However, the demanding nature of the fanbase has seen them wanting more, with displays on the pitch far from the level expected despite avoiding defeat in every game to date.

Off the pitch, everything also appears to be up in the air after a bombshell update which emerged during the early hours of Friday morning.

What’s the latest on Everton’s proposed takeover?

On Friday morning, it was confirmed that Everton owners the Friedkin Group had decided to put the club up for sale despite taking over a little over 22 months ago.

The American-based group are wanting a full sale of 100% in the near future, but will only pass the responsibility over to whoever they believe can take the club to the next level.

It’s unclear how much would be required to sell the Toffees, as the group paid around £331m to acquire the club from Farhad Moshiri back in December 2024.

Former Newcastle United investor Amanda Staveley has emerged as a possible option to take the reins from the Friedkin Group – but no deal for the takeover is imminent.

The 53-year-old is also keen on a deal to invest in Championship side West Ham United, with it remaining unclear who she prefers to make a move for at present.

However, she does remain a viable option for the Friedkin Group, especially given the work she conducted in leading the Magpies up the Premier League.

Why Staveley buying Everton is bad news for David Moyes

Staveley has previous experience in leading a club forward in the Premier League, as seen during her time involved with Newcastle’s Saudi takeover in 2021.

During her time at St James’ Park, she oversaw the decision to sack Steve Bruce from the managerial role in favour of a change to push the club in the right direction.

As a result, such a situation could unfold at Everton should the 53-year-old be a part of any takeover, which could result in current boss David Moyes being handed his marching orders.

Rumours around the Scotsman’s future have been swirling around Merseyside over recent months, with the possible takeover no doubt fuelling that fire.

It may be seen as a harsh decision given the unbeaten start to the new campaign, but any new ownership group will strive for glory – which could result in a fresh man in the dugout.

Why Moyes’ replacement will be perfect for Thierno Barry

Despite the possible takeover still at the very early stages, the talk of a possible managerial switch has been heightened and simply refuses to die down at present.

A plethora of names have been mentioned with the possible vacancy at the Hill Dickinson, but one manager appears to be the front runner after his time under Staveley.

Former Newcastle boss and Everton fan Eddie Howe has been credited with the possibility of replacing Moyes, with the latest update providing fresh light on a deal.

It’s been reported by TEAMtalk that the 48-year-old would be open to taking the reins on Merseyside should the current manager be handed his marching orders.

The report also states that Staveley and her group would undoubtedly make a move for the Englishman should they decide to part company with Moyes before the end of the season.

He is currently a free agent after walking away from the Magpies job before the start of the 2026/27 campaign, but it’s unclear how soon he would want to jump back into management.

Any deal for Howe would hand the Toffees a proven Premier League boss and one who could allow striker Thierno Barry to reach the next level in his development.

The Frenchman has started the new campaign in tremendous form, subsequently managing to find the back of the net six times in his first eight games across all competitions.

The 23-year-old has led the line for Everton over recent months, and the possibility of working with Howe could allow the forward to benefit from his man-management skills.

The Englishman worked closely with Alexander Isak during his time in charge on Tyneside, which saw the Swedish international catch the eye for his efforts in front of goal.

He netted a remarkable 62 goals in his 109 appearances for the Magpies, subsequently allowing him to become one of Europe’s most in-demand talents.

Such a record saw him move to Liverpool for a British-record £125m fee – something which was once unimaginable after his subsequent move from Real Sociedad in 2022.

Howe, who’s been dubbed “the next England manager” by Jamie Carragher, played a huge part in his development, which could see him have a similar impact on the performances of Barry.

Swapping Moyes for the former Newcastle boss could be somewhat of a risk, but it could provide the club with the platform needed for success in England’s top flight.

However, it could prove to be a blessing in disguise should Barry be able to provide a similar level of output to Isak during his own time working under the Englishman.
