Lisbon Football Association (AFL) wrote: “The Lisbon Football Association deeply regrets the death of Quévin Castro, a player for Real SC SAD, who passed away this morning during a friendly match between Real SC SAD and Estrela da Amadora. The tragic event occurred at the Estádio das Seixas, in Malveira.

“To his family, friends, and affiliated club Real SC SAD, we extend our deepest condolences at this tragic time for Portuguese football. 🖤”

Quevin Castro spent much of his career in English football, but started out with Sporting CP’s youth academy, before turning out for the likes of Thetford, Mildenhall, Leiston, Bury Town, Norwich CBS, West Bron, Burton, Notts County, Gateshead, York, King’s Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City, Eastbourne Borough, and his latest side Real Sport Clube.

York chairman Matt Uggla said in his tweet: “This news has really hit me hard. Quevin was one of our first players to sign when we took over the club and had all the talent to go to the top. The young lads, Quevin, Thierry, Levi, and Kev always held a special place in my heart. We all were beginning a journey and all were new to what we were doing. I always wanted those boys to come on the journey to the very end with me. Unfortunately football doesn’t always have the fairytale ending.

“I do often contemplate if I had just stuck to my gut and stuck with these boys and help them fulfil their potential and it doesn’t sit right with me that I felt I let them down. But that connection continued even after they left. I’ve always kept in contact with Quevin and Thierry especially, always keeping my eye on their careers and feeling proud when I’d see them have a good game.

“The last time I spoke to Quevin he was so excited for the club and the promotion and was also excited to get his playing career back on track. The news today absolutely took me out and made our game hard to even watch. Really puts everything into perspective. I’m sad I won’t see Quevin again but I’m glad for the time we did get to spend together. A lovely young man taken far too soon. Rest easy my brother ❤️😞”

York City FC: “Everyone at York City Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of former player Quevin Castro.

“Quevin was a much-loved member of our 23/24 team. We will all miss him dearly.

“We send all our love to Quevin’s friends and family at this very difficult time.”

West Brom said in a statement on their website: “Albion will pay tribute to Quevin on Sunday, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of the fixture against Burnley. James Morrison’s men will also wear black armbands.

“Quevin joined the Baggies as a teenager in 2021 and went on to make his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal.

“He made his maiden league outing for the club in February 2022 and scored in the Premier League Cup final triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers three months later. Castro later had loan spells at Burton, Notts County and Gateshead, before departing The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.

“The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time.”

King’s Lynn Town: “Everyone at King’s Lynn Town is saddened by the tragic passing of former midfielder Quevin Castro at the age of 25.

“Our deepest condolences are with Quevin’s family and friends at this time.”

Gateshead FC: “We are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of former player, Quevin Castro.

“Quevin joined Gateshead on loan from West Brom during the 2022/23 season, appearing twice and immediately showing his reputation for flair and skill on the ball.

“Rest easy, Quevin 🤍”

Notts County: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of our former player, Quevin Castro.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this very sad time.”

Burton Albion: “Everyone at Burton Albion was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of former player Quévin Castro, at the age of 25.
