Tottenham storm into race to sign “astonishing” Porro replacement who Pochettino loves

Tottenham Hotspur have now set their sights on an “astonishing” new signing, who has received the seal of approval from former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

While Pedro Porro‘s contract isn’t due to expire until 2031, which places Tottenham in a strong negotiating position, the defender is now looking to seal a move elsewhere, as he has doubts about whether the club’s ambitions match his own.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in signing the World Cup winner, who is intrigued by the possibility of returning to Spain, which may be concerning for Roberto De Zerbi, considering the Italian has lavished his right-back with high praise.

After the Spaniard penned a new deal back in the summer, De Zerbi said: “Pedro is a very important player for us, who has consistently shown his ability to influence matches in both defensive and attacking situations.

“As well as his technical quality, I also love his mentality. Every day he wants to work, to learn and to improve, and these are the characteristics that help players reach the highest level.”

The 27-year-old has since remained very important, featuring for 2,798 minutes in the Premier League this season, the second-highest number in the squad, and he has been by far the most creative player.

Clearly, there are plenty of good reasons to keep hold of the right-back, but Spurs are now looking at bringing in a replacement, with Barcelona and Real Madrid still keen on Porro.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Villarreal defender Alex Freeman has now emerged as a target for Tottenham, given that Porro is keen on a return to Spain, but there could be stiff competition, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea also keen.

Pochettino has previously made it clear he is a big fan of the American, and suggested he has what it takes to become one of the best right-backs in the world.

“He’s such a humble guy, he has an amazing profile, he wants to learn, he always listens. He’s a player that you really enjoy being with, not only coaching. He’s a lovely guy, and he’s an amazing player. For me, he has the potential to be one of the best players in his position in the world.”

The 22-year-old has been an important player for Villarreal this season, picking up nine appearances in La Liga, and an average of 2.8 tackles per 90 is the third-highest in the squad, showcasing his defensive capabilities.

Villarreal manager Inigo Perez has praised the 26-cap USA international for his “astonishing composure”, while also adding that he is capable of playing at right-back, left-back, centre-back or even further forward.

Freeman’s versatility means he could be the ideal addition for Tottenham, should Porro depart, but their number one priority needs to be keeping hold of their current right-back, given that he is already Premier League proven.
