The Backfiring Backtrack of Daniel Ricciardo

When Daniel Ricciardo returned to F1 with Red Bull’s sister outfit in mid-2023, it was a decision made with one clear goal in mind; to get re-promoted back into senior operation Red Bull and finish his F1 adventure in style, rather than the whimpering manner in which his time at McLaren had ended the previous year.

The stars could not have been more aligned for this reunion. The form of Red Bull’s second driver, Sergio Perez, was steadily beginning to drop off a cliff. Red Bull junior candidates were relatively thin on the ground. The prospect of a Red Bull return for Ricciardo was something actively supported by the team’s big players; Horner, Marko and Verstappen. Yet somehow, it all went wrong.

Today, we’re diving into our most recent topic yet, to untangle why this surefire move failed to come off. Was it as simple as Ricciardo failing to grasp the opportunity he’d been given? Or were there other factors in the background making this scenario further out of reach than it seemed?

Along the way, my opinion on sprints are summed up by Renee Zellweger, I look moody and pensive at the F1 Exhibition, and there’s an alarming realisation that Ricciardo looks a bit like the first boss of Persona 5.
