Sunderland launch approach to sign attacking star who could get shock role under Le Bris
Sunderland have been one of the quietest teams in the Premier League this summer.
Fresh from Europa League qualification last season, many assumed that the Black Cats would be flexing their new-found status for the first time. So far, though, they’ve settled for what they’ve got.
With just over two weeks before the window, things could quickly change. It’s certainly not been from the want of trying as far as the Black Cats are concerned, either.

The Wearside club have held reported interest in Sporting CP’s Geny Catamo, only for the Portuguese club to price them out of a deal. It’s left Catamo fuming and forced Sunderland to turn their focus towards Timothy Weah.
The priority seems to be a winger at the Stadium of Light, and Weah makes perfect sense as a Catamo alternative. The American has held experience at the very top, including the 2026 World Cup, and spent time at Juventus before joining Marseille.
His versatility also stands out. This is a player who can provide support at both right-back and right-wing – killing two birds with one stone for Regis Le Bris.
That could also free up Nordi Mukiele to provide centre-back cover like last season without a sacrifice down the right-hand side. With the task of balancing European and domestic football next season, cover across several positions will be key.
As reported by TeamTalk, Sunderland have now made contact to sign Weah from Marseille this summer – launching an official enquiry. The French club are ready to sell the versatile winger if they receive a significant offer this month, as they look to raise some much-needed funds.
Weah started 29 Ligue 1 games last season, playing a key role as Marseille battled to finish 5th. Premier League interest may be music to their ears nonetheless, as they aim to reduce costs.
In terms of quality, the American would be best-suited to playing as a flying right-back for Le Bris, having been involved in just seven goals in all competitions last season.

Mukiele wasn’t without his injury struggles last season and replacing his quality was not easy. By signing Weah, Sunderland would have competition for the right-back in the form of a player with plenty of European calibre.
The Black Cats could even hand Weah the responsibility in the Europa League, before asking him to also fill in out wide in domestic competitions.
With just over two weeks until the window slams shut, however, Sunderland have to find out just how much Marseille value the American this month.
They are ready to accept a significant offer, but it remains to be seen whether that will be in Sunderland’s range.
