SA vs AUS: Matt Renshaw to open in 2nd Test? Pat Cummins reflects on Australia’s batting reshuffle tactics

Australia will have important decisions to make regarding their batting combination ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha. Matt Renshaw‘s outstanding performance in the opening Test in Durban has given the team another selection dilemma, with the left-hander scoring 272 runs across both innings. However, Australian captain Pat Cummins has indicated that the team will continue to prioritise flexibility rather than commit to a fixed batting order.

Pat Cummins on Matt Renshaw’s batting position

Renshaw played a crucial role in Australia’s recovery during the first Test, scoring 190 in the first innings and following it up with 82 in the second. His contributions helped the visitors recover from a difficult position at 124/6 on the opening day before going on to secure a commanding victory.

The left-hander was promoted to the middle order because Cameron Green suffered an abdominal injury. Australia subsequently recalled Nic Maddinson and deployed him as an opener, marking his return to Test cricket nearly a decade after his previous appearance.

With Green’s availability for the second Test still uncertain, Australia could retain their revised combination or make further adjustments. Cummins acknowledged that Renshaw’s performance had made the selection decision considerably more complicated.

“Give us a few days, we’ll look at the conditions of the next Test. I mean, it’s got to be pretty compelling to move Renshaw from there,” Cummins said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

The Australian captain also highlighted Renshaw’s versatility, suggesting that the experience could benefit him even if the team eventually changes his position and make him open the innings.

“But we’ve seen Travis Head down at No. 5 as well. We’re always working out the six batters, or seven plus [Alex Carey] and how is that going to function as a whole? So, if anything, I still think he [Renshaw] can be a great opener, and now he’s got another string to his bow that he’s found this week,” he added.

Cummins explains Australia’s batting flexibility

Australia have established a relatively settled structure in the middle order, with Marnus Labuschagne at No. 3 and Steve Smith at No. 4. Cummins believes Maddinson’s inclusion has created additional opportunities to experiment with the top order without disrupting the team’s established positions.

“We’re pretty certain that we like Marn [Labuschagne] at No. 3, Smithy at No. 4, and then, the six and seven felt pretty locked up,” Cummins explained.

He further pointed out that the new combination offered Australia several possibilities, including moving Travis Head or Renshaw to No. 5, while Maddinson could also occupy that position. Cummins reiterated that adaptability would remain an important part of Australia’s approach, depending on the conditions they encounter. He said: “We haven’t had that option [in] the last few years where we feel like we’ve got plenty of options at the top. Why not next week, have different openers if the conditions take us somewhere different, or swapping out the batting orders between innings.”

Durban victory highlights importance of patience

Beyond the selection debate, Australia’s victory in Durban reinforced Cummins’ belief in the importance of remaining patient during challenging Test matches. He explained that the team needed to improve its ability to negotiate difficult periods and capitalise when opportunities emerged. Cummins was particularly pleased with how Australia recovered after losing six wickets on the opening day and subsequently maintained control once they established a lead.

“This week has felt a bit more, I don’t know, like the old Test cricket, I reckon. It’s a bit more of a grind. Overseas, it’s always tough. You never quite know what you’re going to get [in the] first Test, the position we were on day one, six down, [it] felt well behind where we wanted to be. Then, mainly through Renshaw, clawing our way back … and then once we had the lead not giving it back,” Cummins added further..
