With both teams boasting a blend of experienced campaigners and exciting younger players, the series promises plenty of intriguing individual battles. The opening Test in Galle will also put India’s squad to an early test, particularly against Sri Lanka’s spinners in conditions traditionally known to favour turn as the match progresses.

The spotlight will be firmly on India’s new-look leadership group, with Shubman Gill leading the side in the longest format. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to make the most of home conditions under Dhananjaya de Silva. Ahead of the series opener, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has offered his thoughts on how India’s playing XI could look in Galle.

Ashwin revealed his preferred combination on his YouTube channel, naming a playing XI that features a strong mix of youth, experience and spin-bowling options. The selection contains several interesting calls. Ashwin has backed Devdutt Padikkal to occupy the No. 3 position, while captain Gill comes in at No. 4. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul form an experienced opening combination, giving India two batters capable of handling different phases of a Test innings.

Rishabh Pant‘s presence at No. 5 adds an attacking dimension to the middle order, while Dhruv Jurel provides another wicketkeeping option. Ashwin has also opted for Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav, giving India three specialist spin options alongside the part-time possibilities within the batting group.

At the other end, Mohammed Siraj is the senior pace option in Ashwin’s predicted XI, with Gurnoor Brar completing the bowling attack. The combination suggests that Ashwin expects spin to play a significant role at Galle.
