Newcastle and Aston Villa battling for 20 year-old Bundesliga sensation
Newcastle United are set to battle Aston Villa for an exciting new striker after Matthias Jaissle lamented his side’s wastefulness in front of goal in Monday’s defeat at Coventry City.
Jaissle frustrated by Newcastle profligacy
The Magpies have endured a difficult start to the campaign despite significant investment during the summer transfer window, and Monday’s result has only increased the pressure to turn their fortunes around.
Jaissle was particularly frustrated by his side’s inability to make the most of their opportunities, believing Newcastle had performed well enough to win the game.
“We’re frustrated definitely. The lads as well in the dressing room, it’s a feeling you don’t want to have when you feel you should have won.
“We can only apologise to the fans that took the journey. We need to analysis it clearly, especially in the box, at both ends. The desire and hunger to score, to finish the attacks, that was missing.”
The Newcastle boss also highlighted his side’s defensive mistakes, suggesting they had been punished for failing to capitalise on their momentum after the interval.
“We need to win these games in the boxes. Defensively we need to improve. On the offensive we need to be more sharp. That’s hard. That’s punishment in this league. We controlled many phases but it’s not enough.
“In the boxes the games are decided. In both boxes we were not clean. It’s something we need to learn fast.”
Newcastle strengthened considerably in midfield and out wide during the summer, but their central attacking options remain a concern.

Nick Woltemade’s departure just a year after arriving as the replacement for Alexander Isak is set to force the club back into the market to find a long-term successor for the Swede, although they face competition from Aston Villa for one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards.
Newcastle and Aston Villa battling for Christian Kofane
Football FanCast sources understand that Newcastle are actively scouting Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane, with plans to open discussions over a potential transfer in the summer of 2027.
The Magpies are monitoring the 20-year-old’s development closely and believe an opportunity could emerge at the end of the season, when Leverkusen may be willing to cash in on their prized youngster.
Newcastle face competition from Aston Villa and Everton, both of whom remain interested after unsuccessful attempts to sign Kofane during the summer. Leverkusen were determined to retain the Cameroon international ahead of the current campaign, resisting approaches from Premier League clubs despite significant interest in his services.
The situation could change next summer, however, with Kofane recently putting negotiations over a contract extension on hold. His current deal runs until 2029, but Leverkusen had been hoping to secure his future until 2031 with improved terms.
With those discussions now stalled, there is a growing feeling that the striker could become available at the end of the season, providing Newcastle and Villa with an opportunity to renew their pursuit.
Christian Kofane attracting Premier League interest after Cameroon breakthrough
Kofane has enjoyed a remarkable rise since moving to Europe, initially joining Spanish second-tier side Albacete before earning a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025.
The powerful centre-forward scored eight goals in just 20 appearances during his first senior campaign in Spain and has continued his development in Germany, registering ten goals and nine assists in 50 competitive appearances for the Bundesliga club.
Kofane also announced himself on the international stage earlier this year, scoring twice for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations while still a teenager, and journalist Pete O’Rourke recently explained why the youngster is generating so much interest.
“I’m sure the German club would like to keep hold of him as well and probably wouldn’t want to lose him in the winter transfer window either.
“But I think there’s potential options maybe for next summer for that interest to be reignited in Christian Kofane, because he is very highly regarded by these clubs.
“He’s a big, tall striker but also very mobile, he can play out wide or down the middle, so I think that’s why he ticks a lot of boxes for Premier League clubs.”
Both Newcastle and Villa could offer Kofane an attractive route into English football, although their prospects of securing his signature may depend on how their respective seasons unfold. The two clubs have endured disappointing starts to the campaign, and with the Cameroon international attracting interest from across Europe, securing qualification for continental competition could prove crucial.
Newcastle will be hoping their plans to move early in the summer give them an advantage, but Villa’s longstanding interest means the Magpies could face a significant battle to land one of the Bundesliga’s most promising young forwards.
