New Zealand appoint WTC champion as their new batting coach

New Zealand are set to make a significant change to their coaching setup as they prepare for the next phase of their Test programme. The Black Caps have decided to bring in a former international star with extensive experience at both domestic and international level, with the new batting coach set to join the team during a transition period before taking full charge of the role.
WTC winner roped in as New Zealand batting coach
Former wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling has been appointed as the new batting coach of the New Zealand men’s cricket team, replacing Luke Ronchi at the end of the Test series against India in early December. Watling is currently serving as the head coach of Northern Districts Men and will begin his new role with New Zealand on November 16. He will initially work alongside Ronchi to ensure a smooth transition before officially taking over the batting responsibilities.
The former wicketkeeper-batter will formally assume the position when New Zealand travel to Australia for a four-Test series. His appointment adds an experienced former international cricketer to the Black Caps’ support staff, with Watling bringing a strong understanding of the demands of Test cricket.
Watling enjoyed a distinguished playing career and was part of New Zealand’s World Test Championship-winning side. Across 178 first-class matches for New Zealand, Northern Districts and Durham, he accumulated more than 10,000 runs and registered 18 centuries. He also finished his first-class career with an impressive 450 catches.
After retiring from international cricket in 2021, Watling moved into coaching and continued to build his experience away from the playing field. His coaching career has included stints with the Wellington Firebirds and Northern Districts. His work with Northern Districts has already produced considerable success, with the team winning the Super Smash in the 2025-26 season and the Plunket Shield in 2024-25.

Tom Latham reacts after new batting coach’s appointment
New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham welcomed Watling’s return to the national setup, highlighting the qualities that made him such an important figure during his playing career. Latham believes Watling’s attitude and commitment on the field will also serve him well in his new coaching role.
“BJ is a guy who personified what it means to be a BLACKCAP, so having someone like him come back into the group will be great for our environment. There was never any doubt about his effort and determination every time he stepped onto the field, and I’m sure that same attitude will translate in his coaching style,” Latham said in an official statement.
