Mercedes Put A Real Formula 1 Engine In A Road Car — It Took Years Longer Than Planned
2017. Frankfurt. Mercedes-AMG made an incredible promise: a road car powered by the actual hybrid engine from Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 car. It was called the AMG One. Then reality hit. Making an F1 engine survive daily driving and pass emissions rules turned into a nightmare. Deliveries were delayed again and again. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reportedly admitted it might have been a bad idea. Finally, in late 2022, owners got their cars. Only 275 were built, at around $2.7 million each. And the engine needs a major rebuild after about 50,000 kilometers.
