JioHotstar Enters Middle East Through STARZPLAY

JioHotstar has entered the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, taking a partnership route rather than building its own service from scratch. The platform will be available as a dedicated destination inside the STARZPLAY app and website.

What Was Announced

JioHotstar described itself as India’s largest streaming platform in the announcement, which came from Mumbai on October 7. The MENA launch follows its debut in the UK, Canada and Singapore in September. The Tech Portal put the gap at five weeks.

The offering includes:

  • JioHotstar Originals, available at the same time as in India
  • Television content from JioStar channels
  • Films and reality shows, with content in up to 10 Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam
  • Malayalam content, reflecting the large Malayali community in the region

The launch was marked by a projection on Dubai’s Burj Khalifa featuring JioHotstar and STARZPLAY branding.

A Different Model From the UK, Canada and Singapore

In those three markets, JioHotstar launched as a standalone service. In MENA it is embedded in an existing platform, with no separate app or local infrastructure build required. STARZPLAY is a subscription video-on-demand service across the region, known for Hollywood titles, Arabic series, Turkish dramas, live sports and family programming.

One analysis described this as an asset-light approach that reduces acquisition costs and operational risk in a region where streaming remains a tough business. JioStar says it will keep building its international presence through market-specific partnerships and distribution models.

Amit Malhotra, Head of International Business at JioStar, said the early response in the UK, Canada and Singapore reinforced the company’s belief in the global opportunity for Indian entertainment.

Who Is the Audience?

The target is the large South Asian diaspora in the Gulf, which has long been a major audience for Indian films, serials and reality shows. One report notes that JioHotstar’s India sports rights do not travel with the international service, so the offering centres on entertainment rather than live cricket.

Why It Matters

JioHotstar, the platform created by the Reliance and Disney media merger, has said its platform has over 500 million active users. International expansion gives it a way to monetise Indian content beyond the home market while reaching viewers who already follow Indian entertainment closely. Subscription pricing and plan details for MENA were not specified in the reports reviewed.
