IPL 2027: 5 candidates who can replace Mahela Jayawardene as Mumbai Indians head coach
Mumbai Indians (MI) have begun their search for a new head coach after parting ways with Mahela Jayawardene following a disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign. The five-time champions endured a difficult season, finishing ninth in the standings and failing to qualify for the playoffs. The result has prompted the franchise to explore a change in its coaching setup as it looks to bounce back in the upcoming edition.
With the IPL 2027 season approaching, the Mumbai management has reportedly prepared a shortlist of five candidates for the vacant position, with interviews expected to take place in the coming days. The franchise will also have to finalise its retention plans before the November 15 deadline, followed by the mini-auction reportedly scheduled for December 16. Here are five candidates who could take charge of Mumbai Indians ahead of the next season.
5 candidates who could replace Mahela Jayawardene at Mumbai Indians
1. Michael Hussey

Former Australian batter Michael Hussey is reportedly among the leading contenders for the Mumbai Indians head coach position. Widely known as Mr Cricket, Hussey spent nine years as the batting coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), gaining extensive experience in the IPL environment.
His understanding of Indian conditions, player development and tournament demands could make him a strong candidate for the role. Having worked closely with players in a successful franchise setup, Hussey could bring continuity and a methodical approach to Mumbai’s rebuilding plans.
2. Aaron Finch

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch is another name reportedly under consideration. He led Australia to their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2021, establishing his credentials as a leader in the shortest format.
Finch also represented multiple IPL franchises during his playing career, giving him considerable exposure to the tournament and its demands. However, his limited experience in formal coaching roles could be a factor as Mumbai assess their options.
3. Adrian Birrell

South African coach Adrian Birrell could offer Mumbai considerable experience in coaching and team management. He has worked across international cricket and franchise competitions, building a reputation for developing players and establishing structured team environments.
Birrell has also enjoyed considerable success in the SA20, guiding Sunrisers Eastern Cape to three titles. His experience in building competitive squads could appeal to Mumbai as they look to address the shortcomings of their 2026 campaign.
4. Mark Boucher

Former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher is familiar with the Mumbai Indians setup, having served as the franchise’s head coach in 2023 and 2024. Under Boucher, Mumbai reached Qualifier 2 in IPL 2023 before finishing 10th in the following season.
He was subsequently replaced by Jayawardene ahead of the 2025 campaign. His previous experience with the franchise could help him understand the squad and its requirements. However, Mumbai’s results during his earlier tenure will likely form part of the assessment if he is considered for a return.

5. Eoin Morgan

Former England captain Eoin Morgan completes the reported shortlist. He played a significant role in transforming England’s white-ball approach and led the team to its maiden men’s ODI World Cup title in 2019.
Morgan also captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, giving him experience of leading a high-profile franchise dressing room. His tactical understanding of limited-overs cricket could appeal to Mumbai, although he has yet to establish himself in a long-term head coach role.
