IND vs WI: Former pacer explains why Kuldeep Yadav should play the deciding 5th T20I

India will head into the fifth and final T20I against West Indies under pressure after their bowling unit struggled to contain the visitors in Hyderabad. The 24-run defeat in the fourth encounter brought the five-match series to 2-2, leaving both teams with everything to play for in Bengaluru. With the M Chinnaswamy Stadium expected to offer another high-scoring contest, former India pacer Varun Aaron has backed Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion, arguing that India’s approach should prioritise taking wickets rather than merely restricting runs.

Varun Aaron explains why Kuldeep Yadav should play the 5th T20I

Aaron believes Kuldeep could be an important addition to India’s bowling attack for the series decider, particularly because of the conditions expected at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Speaking on Star Sports, the former fast bowler highlighted the importance of wrist-spin at a venue where batters often look to attack from the outset.

“Kuldeep Yadav has to play, especially at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Yuzvendra Chahal was doing commentary with us. He is the finest exponent of how to get wickets in a stadium like that. Again, a wrist-spinner. Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of those grounds where if you just go to save your skin and try to be defensive, you are going to go for plenty,” Aaron said.

His assessment centres on the need for India to adopt an aggressive bowling strategy instead of allowing West Indies’ powerful batting lineup to dictate the pace of the game. Aaron also recommended playing five specialist bowlers, with the batting lineup extending to No. 7. He pointed out that India’s all-rounders could provide sufficient depth to support such a combination without significantly weakening the batting unit.

“The only way you can be defensive there is to absolutely attack and try to get wickets. So I would say play Kuldeep Yadav. Take a punt with five bowlers. You can bat till seven. There is no problem. You have a couple of all-rounders there. So bat till seven, play five bowlers, and win the trophy,” Aaron added.

India’s bowling struggles raise questions ahead of the decider

India’s performance in the fourth T20I exposed their difficulties in containing an aggressive West Indies batting lineup. The visitors posted a formidable 247/3 in 20 overs, putting the hosts under considerable pressure before the chase even began. Shai Hope led the charge with an unbeaten 102 off 50 deliveries, while Sherfane Rutherford contributed 49 not out from 26 balls. Shimron Hetmyer also provided valuable support with a rapid 33 off 12 deliveries.

India eventually lost the match by 24 runs, despite an attacking 56 off 23 balls from Sanju Samson. With the bowling attack struggling to keep the scoring under control, Aaron’s suggestion offers one possible route for India to strengthen their wicket-taking options.

Fans expect a cracker of a contest in the deciding 5th T20I

The series finale at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium promises a compelling contest, with both sides having an opportunity to claim the series. West Indies will look to carry their winning momentum into the decider and secure a memorable series triumph. India, meanwhile, will be eager to respond after their Hyderabad setback and make better use of their bowling resources.

Whether India follow Aaron’s recommendation and bring Kuldeep into the playing XI remains to be seen. However, his argument highlights a crucial selection question: should India prioritise batting depth or add another wicket-taking option for a venue where defensive bowling can prove costly?
