Whalefall (2026) is an upcoming American survival thriller directed and produced by Brian Duffield, based on Daniel Kraus’s 2023 novel of the same name. The film follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, a young scuba diver who travels into the deep ocean while searching for the remains of his missing father, portrayed by Josh Brolin. His search takes a terrifying turn when he is suddenly swallowed alive by a massive whale, leaving him trapped inside its body with limited oxygen and almost no chance of rescue. As Jay desperately tries to escape before his air runs out, the film turns the ocean into a claustrophobic nightmare where survival depends on his ability to remain calm and find a way out. Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd also star in the film, which combines underwater survival, psychological tension, and emotional family drama. Based on Kraus’s intense survival novel, Whalefall promises to deliver a terrifyingly unique premise while exploring Jay’s relationship with his father and his struggle to survive against impossible odds. The film began production in Los Angeles in June 2025, with additional scenes filmed around the Monterey Peninsula, and is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on October 16, 2026, by 20th Century Studios.
