Talk of Regis Le Bris‘ dismissal toward the business end of the 2025/26 Premier League season was ludicrous, though it did expose a flaw within the Sunderland machine that needs sorting out this summer.
Sunderland are not creative enough, and while that was hardly the be-all and end-all for a team who finished seventh after promotion from the Championship, rolling out a carpet which leads to the Europa League, the action will come thicker and faster this year. Sunderland will need to add further reinforcements if they hope to thrive once again.

Le Bris’ side are built on industry and togetherness, but there’s no question that they need to sharpen their playmaking tools. Too much was left to be desired on that front last term.
Who needs to step up for Sunderland this season
Sunderland have a talented group of attacking players, but not all fired on all cylinders last term, as impressive as Le Bris’ industrious outfit were.
Habib Diarra, for example, failed to live up to the £30m cost that still stands as Sunderland’s club-record payment. He scored twice across 20 Premier League matches, a disrupted campaign.
Not everyone failed to live up to expectations. Chemsdine Talbi and Chris Rigg both caught the eye. Both young attackers are slated for big things this year, with Talbi having “really grown into the Sunderland shirt” over that first year, according to journalist Phil Smith.
However, Caught Offside have revealed that Galatasaray are growing in confidence that they could sign Talbi this summer. Letting him leave would be a dubious move, especially without the right replacement brought in.
The likes of Talbi and Diarra and Rigg need to up their game this year. However, Sunderland will not survive the harsh conditions of a European campaign without bringing more firepower and creative spark over to Wearside.
Sunderland in talks to sign Talbi upgrade
Simon Adingra is back from his loan spell with Monaco, where he scored three times in Ligue 1 across 14 games last year, but the 24-year-old hasn’t inspired much confidence when wearing a Sunderland shirt.
According to TEAMtalk, Sunderland could find the perfect solution in Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo, who is keen on the prospect of signing for the Wearsiders this summer.
Catamo, 25, registered eight goals and three assists in all competitions last term, with the Mozambique international set to fetch around £34m, some distance below his £51m release clause, yet still above Sunderland’s club-record capture of Diarra.
The Black Cats are said to be ‘optimistic’ that talks will progress soon, with ‘all parties increasingly confident that a deal can be reached’.
Catamo would be the perfect addition, challenging the likes of Talbi for a starting berth on the right wing. Talbi brings pace and skill when dribbling the ball, but his uncertain future at the Stadium of Light only heightens the need to sign someone such as the Sporting star.
Across the recent league campaign in Portugal, Catamo scored six goals, only missing two big chances, while averaging four duels and creating 1.5 chances per game. He is the real deal, alright, and boasts experience in the Europa League. Moreover, Sporting have toppled the likes of Porto and Benfica in skirmishes for silverware in recent years.
Powerful and dynamic, with experience down the left wing too, he would be the perfect Talbi replacement, should the Moroccan winger leave before the end of August.
Of course, Le Bris would be much happier to have the two mavericks in his ranks for the coming campaign, but if Talbi is offloaded, Catamo would not only replace him, but prove a big upgrade, both in progression and in trying to rack up numbers in the final third.
Catamo hasn’t enjoyed his most productive campaign in Liga Portugal, but he has been an instrumental part of a rip-roaring Sporting side for a number of years now, and his underlying skill suggests he would be a fantastic addition to a fast-rising Sunderland side waiting to bloom on the European stage.
