How F1 Pit Crews Change 4 Tires in Under 2 Seconds
How does a Formula 1 pit crew change four tires in just a couple of seconds? The secret isn’t only speed. It’s precision, choreography, specialized equipment, and thousands of hours of practice. The official record is 1.80 seconds, set by McLaren at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.
Before race day, engineers optimize the pit box, wheel nuts, wheel guns, jack positions, tire placement, and every movement in the stop. When the car arrives, the driver brakes at an exact position while the front and rear jacks lift it. Four-wheel-gun operators remove the nuts simultaneously as the tire carriers pull off the old wheels and fit fresh ones. The nuts are tightened, the crew confirms everything is secure, and the car is released.
High-speed cameras and telemetry then analyze every stop to find tiny delays and improve consistency.
