Geny Catamo furious with Sporting as Sunderland ready fresh contact

It’s been a quiet transfer window at the Stadium of Light. After qualifying for the Europa League in their first season back in the top flight, Sunderland have focused on holding what they have rather than adding several reinforcements.

The likes of Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey have stayed put as a result, whilst Thomas Meunier remains the only incoming of the summer at this stage.

With less than a month to go until the window slams shut, though, things could be about to change courtesy of Geny Catamo. The Sporting star has left Sunderland on red alert and could yet arrive before the end of the month.

It’s easy to see why the Black Cats have turned their attention towards the winger, too. Catamo has been a key player in Lisbon for a number of years now and is still just 25 years old.

His experience on the European stage also stands out. The attacking star has played three seasons in the Champions League and squared off against the likes of Bayern Munich and European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The fact is that his arrival would be another impressive statement from Sunderland. Whether they can reach an agreement with Sporting to sign Catamo is another question altogether, though.

After seeing an initial offer rejected, those on Wearside aren’t going away anytime soon. According to Record in Portugal, as relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland are readying a fresh move to sign Catamo and he remains a priority target.

The Black Cats have already seen a bid worth €30m (£26m) turned down by Sporting, who are demanding a guaranteed price of €40m (£34m), but are already expected to return to the negotiating table.

Catamo, himself, has already provided a key boost. He was reportedly furious with his club after they rejected Sunderland’s initial offer and denied him the chance to join the Premier League.

Whether that fume turns into a serious push to leave the Portuguese club remains to be seen. That’s something that the Black Cats could find out for themselves with another offer.

Should they reach Sporting’s asking price, then Catamo would become the most expensive signing in Sunderland’s history – eclipsing the £27m fee they paid for Habib Diarra last summer.

To spend such a price, all parties must be sure that the winger can translate his Sporting form into Premier League success. After eight goals and five assists in all competitions last season, however, there’s every chance that Catamo would hit the ground running.
