Tumbi is a unique musical instrument from Punjab. Punjab, is the land that has given us numerous iconic artists like Lal Chand Yamla Jatt, @diljitdosanjh , Sidhu Moose Wala, and Yo Yo Honey Singh.
Lal Chand Yamla Jatt was a legendary Punjabi folk singer known for his melodious voice and mastery of the Tumbi.
When Yamla Ji found it difficult to travel with heavy musical instruments, he ingeniously crafted a single-string instrument by attaching a string to a round, dried bottle gourd.
Interestingly, Tumbi is also referred to as Ektara, meaning a single wire/one string.
Then there’s Amar Singh Chamkila, often called Punjab’s Elvis. He revolutionized Punjabi folk music with his Tumbi-based compositions. There’s even a movie based on his life, released on Netflix this year.
