Coventry City launch approach to sign Angel Gomes, they’ve received a reply

Coventry City have broken their transfer record four times this summer. The Sky Blues are following the blueprint left behind by Sunderland’s excellent campaign last time out and could continue a new trend of exciting newly-promoted sides.

They’re still not done, either. After welcoming Caleb Yirenkyi for around £23m in an impressive coup, Coventry have turned their attention towards Angel Gomes.

Potential signing

Technically gifted midfielder who can operate between the lines. Coventry are interested and Gomes is reportedly keen on a Premier League return, but the move has not been completed.

The Marseille midfielder spent last season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but did not make his move permanent after their relegation to the Championship.

Now, he could be back on his way to the Premier League, where redemption is waiting once more. At 25 years old, he’s still got the task of proving Manchester United wrong, who let him go in the early stages of his senior career.

Gomes could certainly do with a move away from Marseille, too. Current manager Bruno Génésio previously left the England international out of his plans at LOSC Lille and is now in charge at Marseille. It spells trouble for Gomes, who already left the French club on loan last season.

In terms of quality, it’s easy to see why Frank Lampard and Coventry have shifted their focus towards the midfielder. His ability to break up play out of possession combines excellently with his ability to pass through the lines on the ball. Next to Frank Onyeka, those traits would prove crucial.

At Wolves last season, Gomes completed over 66% of his dribbles and created more than one chance per game. At the right price, he’d be an excellent addition.

As reported by L’Equipe and relayed by Sport Witness, Coventry have now launched an approach to sign Gomes from Marseille. The French club have already given clubs the green light to sign the midfielder and won’t stand in his way if the Sky Blues make a serious push for his signature.

Gomes, himself, is leaning towards a return to the Premier League and that’s more good news for Coventry. Whether they turn their approach into an offer remains to be seen, however.

Dubbed “amazing” by former Man United teammate Anthony Elanga, Gomes is one to watch as the Sky Blues consider entering the market for yet more impressive additions before the end of the month.
