Celtic eyeing Premier League sensation as manager admits he could leave in January

Celtic returned to winning ways in convincing fashion on Sunday as Martin O’Neill’s side claimed a deserved 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park.

The champions had gone into the international break under real pressure after losing three matches in a row.

Back-to-back Old Firm defeats and a Europa League setback against Ferencvaros had seriously damaged confidence while allowing Rangers to close the gap in the title race.

Celtic needed a response, and they produced one from the opening stages.

Camilo Duran broke the deadlock after only nine minutes, driving infield from the right before finding the bottom corner from outside the box.

Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen was then required to make several saves as the visitors threatened to take complete control.

Benjamin Nygren finally added the second goal in the 59th minute.

Celtic broke quickly after winning possession near their own penalty area and Kasper Hogh helped move the ball into Nygren’s path, allowing the midfielder to finish emphatically.

The scoreline didn’t fully reflect Celtic’s superiority, as they enjoyed 66 per cent possession, attempted 25 shots and forced Paulsen into 12 saves.

There was also a major lift when Jota came off the bench for his first competitive appearance in 533 days.

His return added to a far more positive afternoon for a side which had looked well short of confidence before the break.

Celtic are now back on top of the Premiership and attention is already turning towards how they could strengthen O’Neill’s squad in January.

Celtic eye Max Dowman move as Mikel Arteta opens January loan door

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Celtic are eyeing up a move for Arsenal teenager Max Dowman, who is also attracting interest from Rangers and clubs elsewhere in England and Europe.

No decision has yet been made over the 16-year-old’s immediate future, and Arsenal still believe he can contribute to their first team this season, particularly when a packed schedule creates chances for rotation.

However, Dowman will be eligible to move on loan after turning 17 on December 31, and that has created the possibility of a temporary transfer when the winter window opens just a day later.

Mikel Arteta has recently admitted that Arsenal will review the youngster’s position regularly, with the Gunners boss opening the door to a loan move away if it becomes the best option for Dowman’s development.

That uncertainty over his future gives Celtic reason to remain alert.

Dowman is capable of operating from the right or in an attacking midfield role, and his close control, confidence in possession and willingness to run at defenders could offer Celtic another unpredictable option in the final third.

A spell in Glasgow would also give him the chance to play in front of demanding crowds, challenge for silverware and potentially gain European experience.

Those factors could make Celtic an attractive destination if Arsenal decide he needs regular senior football.

Competition would be fierce and Arsenal would require firm assurances over his playing time, and Celtic cannot promise an automatic starting place, especially with Jota returning.

For now, there is no guarantee that Dowman will leave Arsenal at all, but Celtic appear firmly in the developing race, and Sunday’s win showed they may be entering the January build up with their confidence restored.
