Carlos Sainz’s Singapore 2023 win was more than just pace — it was a tactical masterclass. With Mercedes charging on fresh Mediums, Sainz deliberately slowed down to keep Lando Norris within DRS range, knowing Lando could use that extra speed to defend against George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. When Ferrari told him, “Lando, 0.8 behind with DRS,” Sainz simply replied: “Yeah, it’s on purpose.”
The strategy worked perfectly. Norris held off the Mercedes challenge, while Sainz controlled the race to take his second F1 victory by just 0.812 seconds. Russell eventually crashed on the final lap, leaving Hamilton P3. Sainz later said the DRS idea was his own — and honestly, what a move from Mr. Smooth Operator.
More importantly, Sainz became the only non-Red Bull driver to win a race in 2023, ending Red Bull’s 15-race winning streak and their perfect run that season.
