Birmingham now planning approach to hire ex-Watford manager as Davies replacement
Birmingham City are now considering a move for ex-Watford manager Rob Edwards, with Chris Davies under pressure despite a solid start to the campaign.
Under their US ownership, Birmingham will no doubt have their sights firmly set on making a push for the Premier League, and it has been a decent start to the Championship season, all things considered, having only lost one of their opening seven matches.
After the 2-1 victory away at Derby County last time out, Davies suggested his team are heading in the right direction, saying: “I think I’m right in saying we’ve got the same amount of points from the same amount of games as we did last season but we’ve looked a completely different team.
“Not only stylistically but just the strength and mental strength we’ve shown and the desire. It pains me to say it but we would have lost that game last season or we would have drawn it.”
In fact, the Blues manager has maintained a solid record throughout his time at St. Andrew’s, averaging 1.88 points per game across 119 matches, and his most important achievement was winning the League One title by amassing 111 points in the 2024-25 season.
However, there have now been suggestions the Welshman’s position is under threat, with Edwards in the frame to replace him, after being dismissed by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.
Birmingham considering Rob Edwards as Chris Davies replacement
According to a report from Football Insider, Birmingham would make an approach to appoint the ex-Wolves boss, if they were to sack Davies, who has been criticised for his negative approach to matches.
Should the Blues struggle to challenge for a place in the play-offs, the ownership may decide a change is necessary, and they are admirers of Edwards, with the 43-year-old well-aware of what it takes to challenge for promotion.
Indeed, the former Forest Green Rovers manager won the League Two title during his time at The New Lawn, while he also guided Luton Town to promotion in the 2022-23 season, with his side defeating Coventry City on penalties in the play-off final.

Moreover, when the Welshman chose to leave Middlesbrough to join Wolves last November, his side were in the automatic promotion places, which makes the decision to join a struggling Premier League side all the more confusing.
Nevertheless, journalist Henry Hill has suggested Edwards is a fantastic manager at Championship level, which means he could be a solid appointment for Birmingham, although it does seem a little early to be thinking about sacking Davies.
