Aston Villa are now very interested in signing Atletico Madrid star Alex Baena, and the Spanish side’s stance on a transfer has been revealed.
Unai Emery‘s side are looking to make a new addition, amid a difficult start to the Premier League season, having drawn one and lost three of their opening four matches, a record that leaves them 19th in the table.
A lack of attacking output has been a real issue for the Villans, having found the net on just one occasion, whereas Baena has been in fine form in front of goal this season, picking up four goals and one assist in seven matches across all competitions.
Not only does the Spaniard know where the net is, but he has a keen eye for creating chances too, picking up 21 goals and 31 assists in 141 La Liga matches, across spells with Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Girona.

Villarreal’s Director of Football, Miguel Ángel Tena, has also spoken highly of the 25-year-old, saying: “[He] is a player with a special talent that, added to his understanding of the game, makes him a differential player across world football at the moment.”
Aston Villa very interested in signing Alex Baena
According to a report from Spain (via Sport Witness), Aston Villa are now very keen on signing Baena, given how he has started the season, and the way in which he performed for Spain at the World Cup.
Manchester City and Newcastle United are also in the race for the Spain international, but Atletico are reluctant to sanction a departure, and won’t consider selling him at any price.
The left-winger, who is also capable of playing in the number 10 role, remains under contract until 2030, which means it could be very difficult to get a deal done, which may be disappointing news for Emery, who is known to be a big fan.

Emery spent time working with Baena at Villarreal, and he was left very impressed by his compatriot, saying: “His progression is on track, and he’s an intelligent and dedicated young man. He’s a good role model, like Yeremy, Morlanes, Cuenca. They make it difficult for me to build a team.”
However, given that a deal could be difficult to orchestrate, the Villa boss may have to rely on his current left-wingers stepping up, including Alejandro Garnacho, who has made a slow start, featuring for just 31 minutes across three Premier League appearances.
