Aston Villa found their next Rogers v Fener

Following a run of three games unbeaten, the pressure was on Unai Emery to lead his Aston Villa side to yet another victory in the UEFA Champions League.

It’s safe to say his men were more than up to the challenge at Villa Park, subsequently claiming a 6-0 win over Turkish side Fenerbahçe on Wednesday night.

The Villans dominated from start to finish during the latest European clash, with a whole host of attacking talents managing to get themselves on the scoresheet.

How Aston Villa’s win over Fenerbahce played out

Despite the expectations placed upon Aston Villa last night, Emery’s men made a lightning start to the Champions League clash and took the lead within 12 minutes.

On his 21st birthday, attacking midfielder Johan Manzambi opened the scoring with a touch and finish from outside the box – albeit via a deflection off Milan Skriniar.

A little over half an hour after the opener, the Villans found themselves three goals ahead, all thanks to an excellent double from big-money summer signing Nicolas Jackson.

Ross Barkley would add himself to the scoresheet during the second half, subsequently netting a penalty to register his second goal of the 2026/27 campaign.

Two would quickly become three for the former Chelsea midfielder, as he was picked out unmarked on the edge of the box before having his effort deflected past Ederson.

Tammy Abraham would finish off the scoring just a minute before the final whistle, with his effort securing the Villans’ largest ever win on the European stage.

How Manzambi & Jackson caught the eye vs Fenerbahce

For scoring on his birthday and first Champions League appearance, new signing Manzambi was always going to receive huge praise from the Villa faithful.

His underlying stats also demonstrate how excellent the youngster was last night, with the Swiss international making five passes into the opposition’s penalty area.

Such passes allowed him to create two chances for his teammates, resulting in the opposition fouling him on two occasions to prevent him from getting into full flow.

As for centre-forward Jackson, such a performance was arguably the best for the club after he completed his club-record move from fellow Premier League side Chelsea.

Alongside his two goals, the Senegalese international completed four successful dribbles – showcasing his direct nature with the ball within attacking areas.

How Emery has found his next Rogers after Fenerbahce

Both of the aforementioned talents will have a long way to go before they emulate the levels achieved by Morgan Rogers during his own period at Villa Park.

The Englishman netted 31 goals and laid on 25 assists during his 125 appearances for the Villans, which resulted in his record £117m switch to Chelsea this summer.

The likes of Manzambi and Jackson were brought in to soften the blow, and the early signs seem extremely positive – as seen during the triumph over Fenerbahçe.

However, despite the performances from the duo, fellow new arrival Ibrahim Mbaye could be the perfect man to emulate the success of Rogers in the West Midlands.

During the triumph in the Champions League on Wednesday night, the Senegalese international featured off the left-hand side of the attack – just as the Englishman did last campaign.

The 18-year-old laid on the assist for the second of Barkley’s second-half strikes, but his underlying stats further highlight his tremendous talent within forward areas.

The former PSG star managed to create the most chances of any player (4), whilst also having the most touches of any player within the opposition’s penalty area (8).

Both of the aforementioned figures showcase his ability to cause endless trouble to the opposition – something which has been needed after the summer of transition.

Mbaye managed to register a 91% pass completion rate during the high-scoring victory, which no doubt played a huge role in his ability to create big chances in front of goal.

He nearly managed to get himself on the scoresheet too, as the winger registered four shots on goal – with two of his efforts being placed on target and being saved by Ederson.

Alongside his tremendous attacking figures, the teenager also managed to fend off the opposition – as he managed to achieve a 75% ground duel success rate.

After such a performance, Mbaye is in desperate need of a run of starts under Emery to help aid his progression and prove why the club spent big on him this summer.

Should the manager decide to hand the youngster the minutes he needs in the future, there’s no reason why he can’t be as big of a talent as Rogers in the years ahead.
