3 franchises that can target Matt Renshaw in IPL 2027 auction

Australian batter Matt Renshaw could emerge as an interesting option for franchises looking to strengthen their batting line-ups at the IPL 2027 auction. The left-handed batter has gained valuable experience across international cricket and domestic T20 competitions, making him a potential pick for teams searching for an overseas top-order option.

Renshaw has shown that he can adapt his batting to different formats. Although he is better known for his performances in longer formats, his recent T20 displays have demonstrated his ability to accelerate and contribute to competitive totals. His unbeaten 89 off 52 balls against Bangladesh in June this year was one example of his attacking potential. He also scored 324 runs in the 2025-26 Big Bash League at a strike rate of 153.55.

3 franchises that can bid for Matt Renshaw in IPL 2027 auction

1. Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings could consider Renshaw if they want additional depth at the top of their batting order. The franchise has traditionally valued players who can adapt to different match situations, and Renshaw’s left-handed batting could offer another option when building the playing XI.

CSK have several established batting choices, including Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson. However, the franchise will need to assess its opening combinations, backups and overseas-player balance before the 2027 season.

Renshaw could provide cover for the top order while offering the flexibility to play according to the conditions. His experience against international bowling attacks could also help him adjust to the demands of the IPL.

The Australian has shown that he can play a patient innings when required, but his recent T20 performances suggest that he can also increase the scoring rate. If CSK want an overseas batter who can provide depth without necessarily needing to be the centrepiece of their batting line-up, Renshaw could enter their discussions.

Potential role: Overseas top-order batter and batting backup.

2. Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals could also explore Renshaw’s availability if they decide to add another left-handed batter to their squad. The franchise’s auction strategy will depend on its retained players, overseas combinations and the roles it wants to strengthen ahead of IPL 2027.

Delhi already have options such as KL Rahul, Abhishek Porel and other batters who can contribute in the top order. That means Renshaw would need to offer a clear advantage in terms of role flexibility and consistency to become a realistic target.

His left-handed batting could provide variety in a line-up featuring several right-handed options. He could also give the team another choice if injuries, form or changing match conditions require adjustments.

Renshaw’s ability to build an innings before accelerating may be particularly useful on pitches where the ball does not come on to the bat consistently. However, Delhi would need to weigh that benefit against the overseas slots available and the need for power-hitting elsewhere in the squad.

Potential role: Left-handed top-order batter and reserve overseas option.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders are another franchise that could consider Renshaw if they identify a need for additional batting depth. KKR have often looked for players who can combine attacking intent with the ability to handle pressure when early wickets fall.

Renshaw’s recent T20 performances could make him an option worth evaluating. His 89 not out from 52 deliveries against Bangladesh showed that he can produce a substantial innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate.

For KKR, the decision would depend on the balance of their batting group after retentions and releases. If they require a left-handed batter who can operate near the top of the order, Renshaw could provide an alternative to more expensive overseas stars.

However, securing a place in KKR’s XI would not be straightforward. The franchise would have to consider its existing overseas batters, wicketkeeping options and bowling requirements before committing an auction slot to another specialist batter.

Potential role: Top-order batter who can provide additional batting depth.
