F1 Drivers Lose Brake Confidence by Lap 30—Here’s Why

Two drivers got binned at Austin 2023 for a wooden plank under the car. Here’s why it matters. The FIA glues a wood composite to the floor as a wear gauge—it’s softer than the asphalt, so if your car bottoms out and grinds, the plank gets shaved down. You’re allowed to lose some, but past a limit, you’re illegal. Carbon brakes only work hot—they need roughly 1000 degrees—and when a driver pushes too hard, the car dives and scrapes. Those two had plank wear beyond the legal mark. Same car, same track, different throttle management. So here’s the question: should the rule stay, or does it punish drivers for how the track beats them up? The graphics and the data are our own, built to explain it better. Subscribe.
