The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix gave us one of Carlos Sainz’s most impressive performances in Formula 1.
Starting from pole position for Ferrari, Sainz controlled the race around the demanding Marina Bay circuit and focused on managing his tyres rather than simply pushing at maximum pace.
The real masterstroke came late in the race. After Mercedes stopped for fresh medium tyres, Sainz knew that defending against the much faster cars would be extremely difficult. Instead of trying to escape, he deliberately kept Lando Norris close enough to give him DRS.
That decision turned Norris into a moving shield against the charging Mercedes drivers. Norris was able to stay ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, allowing Sainz to maintain the lead and bring Ferrari home for their only victory of the 2023 season.
Sainz crossed the line just 0.812 seconds ahead of Norris, with Hamilton taking third, while Red Bull’s incredible winning streak finally came to an end.
