De Zerbi apologises to fans with Tottenham winless and goalless after four games
Roberto De Zerbi apologises to fans with Tottenham winless and goalless after four games, with a 0-0 draw against Everton.
An unwanted record set by Spurs, it is the first time they have failed to score any of their first four league matches of a season. They also haven’t gone four league games without a goal since 2006.
Roberto De Zerbi said his squad are still not up to the best ‘physical condition’, following on from the World Cup, as the team try to build confidence.
SHORTENED HIGHLIGHTS:
EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS:
De Zerbi told SPURSPLAY: “We are sorry for the result. We are sorry because the target was to play 90 minutes like the first 30 minutes, but we are not in the best physical condition yet.
“Then, we didn’t shoot and we didn’t create enough chances for the quality of the play, the command of the game we had on the pitch. We could shoot more times for goal. We made many wrong decisions in the last third and we have to stay more focused, more calm, I think, and improve where we have a gap to improve.
“It’s the confidence now because we didn’t score. Maybe some players could think in a negative way, but I think no, because we have to be focused on the performance, and the performance said we played 30 minutes very well. We have to extend the 30 minutes in 90, 80, 70 and to play like this. Then, if we keep the same quality of the play and if we improve the last decision, individual decision, collective decision, but more individual, I think we’re going to win many, many games.”
De Zerbi on the full time exchange with Mathys Tel:
“I coached him on the pitch. The body shape: he’s a striker; the striker can’t play with the shoulder on the goal.
“If we are playing with (James) Maddison, (Mohammed) Kudus and Savio, he has to play as a striker, and the striker has to look at the goal, or for the cross of (Andy) Robertson. He has to stay inside.
“He started as a striker; now he’s playing as a winger, but he started his career as a striker.
“But I love Mathys as a player, as a guy; that is not a problem.”

Everton boss David Moyes said, as per Sky Sports:
“I wanted much more from the team, but I told them about coming here.
“We’ve not had a great record here. Only a couple months ago we missed out on Europe here. I generally felt that we had to come here and show a bit more.
“Tottenham were so good for 20 minutes. They put us under so much pressure. We found it difficult to escape from it. We created a couple chances ourselves, but we didn’t play well enough today when we had the ball.
“We know exactly where we’re short and what we could do better at and what we’d like to do better. But there’ll be some games where we might have to play that way just to get ourselves through. It wasn’t the plan, we were forced into it by Tottenham. I thought we did a really good job of being resilient.”
4 games 0 goals it’s an absolute joke how can we not look like scoring it’s so frustrating, my head is fried with this team

Here’s the social media reaction after De Zerbi apologises to fans with Tottenham winless and goalless after four games…
@TheSpursExpress: FT: 0-0. Back to back clean sheets for #Tottenham, but another poor showing. No goals in 400+ #PL minutes and 2 points from 4 games to start the season for #Spurs.
@Fairway180: Fans booing again. Totally classless. Yes you pay to be entertained, but you’re ultimately supposed to be supporters. The definition of support is not doing the opposite and booing the team. Get behind them ffs. #COYS #THFC
@MAILItalia1882: Hi lads, I’m not sure you’re aware but the point of football is to put the ball into the back of the net. In fact, it’s impossible to win without it. Hope this helps 👍
@Mac__James: Fucking embarrassing. Total shit once again from the manager and every attacker on that pitch. Just pathetic every single week
@HardSpursPics: Wow! Who cursed us man?
@FredOdor: Different week, same tottenham
@george_coys: Not good enough. Have to change this style of play or we’ll never score a goal
@David6914626764: Four games in, 340 million spent, no wins and haven’t scored a single goal. Spursy or what 😂😂😂😂😂
@SimonCambridge: Similar to last week, the build up ok, but we’re not creating enough chances for Solanke or Marmoush. You’ve got to create chances in order to score and we’re not doing it enough. Surprised Bentacur & Fernandes went off.
@andybagguley: Pathetic team performance. What are they doing in training with this lot?!
@JustGetSpursed: I’m actually concerned with some of the comments saying “we didn’t play poorly” are you watching the same game or acting like one of those Spurs influencers.
