Fulham are the only club still in the race to sign AS Roma star Matias Soule, as Newcastle United and Sunderland have now backed out.
With the summer transfer window drawing to a conclusion, the Cottagers have set out to sign a new attacking midfielder, after losing their opening two Premier League matches of the season.
Most recently, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side came up short in a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, on a day when they recorded an xG of just 0.95, which underlined the need to bring in a creative player before the window comes to an end.
As such, Soule could be exactly what they need, with Ben Mattinson describing him as “one of the most creative players” in Europe’s top five leagues during the 2023-24 campaign, at which point he was playing for Frosinone.
The Como scout also added: “The Frosinone loanee isn’t the quickest over long distances, however he has good acceleration & changes direction rapidly. Soule drops his shoulder & reduces his stride length effectively to change direction. He’s unpredictable.”
The 23-year-old has since earned a move to Roma, where he impressed throughout the 2025-26 campaign, picking up six goals, five assists and creating 45 chances, which was more than any of Marco Silva’s players managed in the Premier League.

Considering Iwobi is the only one of the aforementioned players that remains at Craven Cottage, the need to sign the Roma star is even clearer, and he could be a perfect replacement for Wilson, as he is also capable of playing on the right-wing or through the middle.
Fulham now frontrunners to sign Matias Soule
Fulham are now the frontrunners in the race to sign Soule, with a report from TEAMtalk revealing they are the only side that still retains a genuine interest in the versatile Argentinian attacker.
Newcastle entered talks for the former Frosinone man before Tuesday’s deadline but have decided to proceed only with Matias Fernandez-Pardo, while Sunderland were in the running but have also backed out of a deal, which would have amounted to around £30m.
However, Roma don’t want to sanction a sale at this stage in the transfer window barring a huge bid, and manager Gian Piero Gasperini has dismissed the rumours linking him elsewhere: “I have never known of any offer; there wasn’t one and nor has there ever been all summer long. For me, he’s playing [against Lecce], so I don’t chase after the news. There was never anything concrete for him, and on his side either, there was never any different idea.”
Soule remains a key part of Gasperini’s plans, so it remains to be seen whether the Cottagers will be able to tempt the Serie A giants into a late sale.
