Are you even smart enough to criticize Taylor Swift?
That’s what she’s betting against when she claps back!
The newlywed recently sat down for an Icon Sessions interview and performance with the Grammy Museum, and in the nearly hour-long conversation she reveals the power move she plays when she responds to those pesky haters.
“Sometimes when people are mocking me it’s really fun to mock them back. Sometimes I like to just use words that they have to look up in order to talk s**t about.”
They do call her the English teacher after all!

Ultimately, though, all the hate just fuels her into becoming even more successful:
“When I’ve gone through something that was sort of an attempt to drive me insane, when you don’t allow that to happen and you use art and music as a way to barrel roll out of that, those are the moments I’m the most proud of.”
She reminds herself she “chose” this life, and she could have stopped at any point before things became “unmanageably big.”
“And I decided not to [quit] because I love it that much. And that’s just where it begins and where it ends. And everything that comes with this ultimately is worth it as long as I get to still make music.”
Besides, as she puts it, her music is there for those who can appreciate it:
“I realized that I’m making music because I’m playing for the fans. I’m putting this out for people who care about it and who look to music as a way to cope with their life in the way that I did. I think that if you can actually go through all those checkpoints, and realize that putting out music that you’ve made that you love so much is not the path to universal validation, if you’re still doing it, then you love it for the right reasons.”
Taylor has faced strong critics ever since she started out as a teenager, so she’s learned from an early age the key to success is NOT listening to every negative voice out there:
“This is why this all worked. It was because I didn’t listen to the people who said that I didn’t have a valid perspective on life because I didn’t fit into a certain demographic. We’re dealing in emotional truths that either resonate or don’t.”
