Rishabh Pant is renowned for bringing an attacking edge to Test cricket, and the India wicketkeeper-batter once again showed why he is regarded as one of the most destructive players in the format. After retiring hurt on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Pant returned to the crease on Day 2 and wasted little time in making his presence felt. The left-hander produced a breathtaking six that soared over long leg and crashed into the roof of the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Pant walked out following the dismissal of debutant Saransh Jain, with Sri Lanka quick Lahiru Kumara immediately testing him with a series of short deliveries. Kumara had been the bowler who struck Pant on the forearm on Day 1, forcing the Indian batter to leave the field retired hurt.
However, there was little sign of hesitation when Pant faced him again. The moment came during the fifth delivery of the 90th over. Kumara dug the ball in short and directed it towards Pant’s body, but the batter responded in typical fashion. He got underneath the delivery and unleashed a powerful hook shot over the long-leg region.
The strike had extraordinary distance behind it. The ball sailed beyond the boundary and landed on the roof of the stadium, reportedly damaging one of the solar panels installed there. It was another reminder of Pant’s ability to turn even a difficult delivery into a scoring opportunity. Rather than allowing the previous day’s injury to affect his approach, he played with the same freedom and aggression that have become hallmarks of his Test batting.

India in strong position courtesy of Pant’s heroics
Pant’s spectacular six was part of an important contribution for India as the visitors strengthened their position in the second Test. The wicketkeeper-batter continued his counter-attacking innings and reached 63 runs by lunch on Day 2.
At the other end, Dhruv Jurel provided valuable support and remained unbeaten on 59. The partnership helped India move to 419/6 by the lunch interval, putting the visitors firmly in command after a productive morning session. With Pant and Jurel still at the crease, India will be keen to accelerate in the second session and push towards a substantial first-innings total. The visitors could also look to set up the game in a way that allows them to declare and put Sri Lanka under pressure later in the day.
