Alonso pushing Chelsea for Arsenal midfielder Zubimendi

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea are eyeing up a potential move to sign Martin Zubimendi from rivals Arsenal, with Alonso personally pushing for the midfielder’s signature.

Martin-Zubimendi-Arsenal

The report states that Alonso actually wanted Zubimendi for Real Madrid last summer and is now once again backing a move for the midfielder at Chelsea, however, Madrid, after potentially missing out on Manchester City’s Rodri, could also be looking at the Gunners man.

Arsenal’s recent signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United could potentially open the door, however, Chelsea aren’t going to get him on the cheap.

The Gunners have no intention of selling Zubimendi for less than €90m (£77m), 12 months on from his move to the Emirates from Real Sociedad for around €70m.

Despite Chelsea already possessing the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia, Zubimendi would offer another high quality option, and at 27 years of age, appears to be in the prime of his career.

In fact, now a Premier League and World Cup winner in 2026, Zubimendi was hailed by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, who said:

“I said that doubting Rodri was an insult to football intelligence, obviously. He’s the best player in the world in his position, knowing that we have Martin Zubimendi behind him, who is also another great player, surely the second best in the world.”

For a Chelsea side entering a new era under Alonso, Zubimendi could be the cherry on the cake in regards to Alonso’s first transfer window in charge of the Blues, however, a deal could be complicated and expensive.
