207 lap times deleted for track limits in just 2 hours of practice at the Circuit of The Americas, with FP3 adding around 42 more. We’ve seen this before. Austria 2023 had over 1,200 track limit reports in 71 laps, 12 penalties handed out 5 hours after the chequered flag, and Esteban Ocon collected 30 seconds of penalties on his own. So this weekend the drivers aren’t racing each other. They’re racing the white line. In qualifying there’s no penalty, just deletion, and with each set of new softs good for 1 lap, all 4 wheels over the line can send you from Q1 to the back of the grid. In the race, breach number 4 is 5 seconds, number 5 is 10, then the count resets.
