Super Bowl: Giant win for New York

New York triumphed by 21 to 17 in tense tussle which was not decided until the last second of the game.

It was a night of razzmatazz and glamour, with Madonna providing the half-time entertainment and advertisers paying an average of 3 cents (2p) per viewer to parade their wares.

Viewing figures were expected to break last year's record of 111 million, with a 30-second commercial slot during the half-time break costing a record $3.5 million (£2.2 million).

It was the fourth time that the Giants had secured the Vince Lombardi trophy, and the second Super Bowl victory for veteran coach Tom Coughlin and his quarterback Eli Manning.

Mr Manning was named the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player - the American football equivalent of Man of the Match.

The streets of New York were deserted during the two-and-a-half hour game, as the city shut down to watch the Big Blue take on their deadly rivals, the Pats, in Super Bowl XLVI.

At half-time, the Giants were trailing New England by 10-9. But in a thrilling fourth quarter, they let the clock run down before scoring a touchdown with 57 seconds on the clock.

There was an anxious wait to see if the Patriots could score again, but in the end, a Hail Mary pass by Tom Brady, the New England quarterback who is married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen, proved futile.

Accepting the trophy for the Giants, owner John Mara, uncle of Oscar-nominated actress Rooney Mara, said: "We know who the most loyal fans in the league are - and this is for you."

The Patriots had been the favourites for the game, having had a superior season to the Giants.
