China: Businesses closed in food safety raids

Chinese authorities have arrested 2,000 people and closed almost 5,000 businesses during a four-month crackdown on illegal food additives.

The campaign was launched in April after a string of food safety scandals, including noodle makers in Guangdong province found to be adding ink and wax to their dough and customers in Changsha who discovered that their freshly bought pork glowed in the dark.

Almost six million food manufacturing companies have been investigated so far, the Food Safety Commission said.
