Fox: I boozed to forget Parkinson's

Michael J Fox has revealed that he resorted to "drinking heavily" after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

The Back To The Future star was diagnosed with the degenerative disorder in 1991, but only opened up about his condition to the public in 1999.

The Canadian actor has since inspired others with his courageous optimism as he continues his battle with the disease, but admitted that wasn't always the case, reported People.com.

"My first reaction to it was to start drinking heavily," he told US shock jock Howard Stern on his Sirius XM Radio show.

" I used to drink to party, but now I was drinking alone and... every day. Once I did that it was then about a year of like a knife fight in a closet, where I just didn't have my tools to deal with it," he added.

Michael - who launched The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which has raised millions for the disease - credited his wife Tracy Pollan, 53, for helping him deal with his demons.

He recalled she looked at him one day and said, 'Is this what you want?'

The 52-year-old knew the answer was no and headed to Alcoholics Anonymous and, eventually, therapy, which he says taught him to "take one day at a time".

"Eventually, things got pretty great," he added.
