Deepika Padukone Joins World's Highest-Paid Actresses

She has already scored box-office gold in Bollywood movies such as "Bajirao Mastani" and "Piku." Now Indian actress Deepika Padukone has notched a place among the world’s highest-paid actresses with a $10 million debut.

Padukone is the only newcomer to the 'World’s Highest-Paid Actresses' ranking and the only Indian star to make the cut. Of the 10 list members, 30% including Padukone hail from outside the U.S.; Chinese actress Fan Bingbing makes the cut for the second consecutive year, while Charlize Theron, a dual South African/American citizen, returns to the list for the first time since 2013.

The Bangalore-bred Padukone, who got her big break with 2007′s "Om Shanti Om," has since starred in several films that have crossed the $150 million or 100 crore mark — a barometer for box-office success in India. The 30-year-old has also become something of a style icon, launching her own label 'All About You' for Indian online shopping site Myntra.

"I think it’s amazing that movies have that impact on people in the way people want to look," Padukone told Vanity Fair of her trend-setting influence.

While Padukone earns far less than her Hollywood counterparts for roles, she compensates with over a dozen lucrative endorsements for local brands including Tanishq jewelry and Vistara, a domestic airline.

These numerous high-paying shills have helped her hedge against a deep pay gap in Bollywood. Though a top male star might earn close to $5 million a movie, prominent Indian actresses rarely clear $1 million a film. Four Bollywood actors will appear on the 'Highest-Paid Actors' ranking, scheduled to publish Thursday, compared to just one on the Highest-Paid Actresses list.

It’s a discrepancy not uncommon in Hollywood. Four actresses, up from three in 2015, banked more than $20 million compared with 18 of the world’s leading men. Together, the world’s 10 highest-paid actresses tallied a combined $205 million between June 1, 2015 and June 1, 2016, before fees and taxes. That’s just a fraction of the men’s cumulative total.

U.S. audiences can watch out for Padukone in 2017′s "xXx: Return of Xander Cage," where she will be making her Hollywood debut alongside Vin Diesel. The global casting fits producer Diesel’s mission: He told FORBES he wanted to be remembered as "the person who brought multiculturalism to the world."

Where last year’s ranking evaluated 18 women, this year’s list has returned to the top 10 to give a more accurate portrait of acting’s earning elite. Earnings estimates are based on data from Nielsen, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with agents, managers and lawyers.
